The Chevy Cruze is getting a five-door hatchback variant for the 2017 model year; that much we already know. But the 2017 Chevy Cruze is getting some other updates and changes for the second year of the second-generation model, including new colors and a couple of new features.
To start, gone are the Siren Red Tintcoat and Blue Ray Metallic colors. Bummer. But four new colors take their place, including Arctic Blue Metallic, Pepperdust Metallic, Graphite Metallic, and Cajun Red Tintcoat.
In addition, Teen Driver mode is added as a new feature. Finally, the 2017 Cruze Sedan in LS trim and with an automatic transmission gets a new 1.4L turbo LEX engine with as a Fleet or Government order. Little is currently known about the LEX motor, so stay tuned as we find out more.
Following are GM’s official RPO-level changes to the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze:
Deletions
- (G1E) Siren Red Tintcoat exterior color
- (GXH) Blue Ray Metallic exterior color
New Features
- (GGB) Arctic Blue Metallic exterior color
- (GMU) Pepperdust Metallic exterior color
- (GPA) Graphite Metallic exterior color
- (GPJ) Cajun Red Tintcoat exterior color
- (TDM) Teen Driver
- (LEX) 1.4L turbo DOHC 4-cylinder DI with Continuous Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) [LS Sedan Automatic only and requires a Fleet or Government order type]

Can I get a diesel hatchback version for the 2017MY?
Typical GM late to the party. Ford has had a hatchback for years other companies have them, Kia, Hyundai, Mazda. When I sold GM , from the 90,s on they always waited to bring out a new product or options. For being so late GM on a hatch, it cost you a sale. We could not wait any longer and bought a Hatch.
Completely agree that GM as a whole always seems to be late to a segment. I do not know whether they are just waiting to see how things develop before jumping in or just not wanting to stick their necks out and take a risk but for whatever reason they are late and you are right it costs them sales and market share.
If you look at each market segment and look at the model that is credited with starting that segment, invariably that model is the leader or very near the top of that segment. Also other manufacturers who jump in later face an uphill battle to compete or beat that models headstart.
Take a look Chrysler and the minivan, Mustang and the pony car, Lexus RX and the midsized luxury crossover, BMW 3 Series and compact luxury sport sedan, et al.
GM should know that fortune favours the brave because even Chevrolet has the Suburban in the large SUV category that they started.
Grow a set GM and take risks.
Same situation with a 2dr coupe.
Any news on the diesel?
Put the 2.0T in it and will buy one!
Well the hatch is welcomed but the delay was more at the hands of Chevy Europe not working out. Once that went south they had no way to share the global body with anyone else till now. The reality is GM can sell enough of them as a global package but not just as a North American car. Ford and everyone else have had it as global package while GM was still rebuilding post Bankruptcy.
As for the Diesel I expect it next year. It will not be cheap as the engines are so expensive to build any more so expect it packages with many options to help leverage the price better.
The 2.0 is not coming for two reasons. One it will not fit and two to make it run well you would need AWD and to do the suspension right etc. Ford is doing this now but it cost base $36,000 and will go over $40,000 with the expected options. I expect the sales will be limited here and have to be shared with Europe. I would look for a Opel Buick hatch with the OPC package to come. It will be shared globally with Holden and Vauxhaul and would be a much better package to make a profit on.
I own a 2.0 turbo SS and love it but have to say that the new Camaro Turbo 4 is a much better package and cheaper than the new Ford RS. Even the V6 will be a much cheaper and better package. The engine really needs AWD or RWD to make any use of it.
Actually…
1. It is very possible and realistic to do a Cruze rival to the Focus ST and Golf GTI. The Focus ST starts at $25,000. In referring to the $35,000 price point, you’re talking about the Focus RS and Golf R. entirely different segments.
2. There hasn’t been word one about the 2.0T LTG fitting or not under in the Cruze. If a 2.0TDiesel can be stuffed in there, then so can the LTG.
The good news is that such a model is under consideration:

Arctic blue? isn’t that like a baby blue silver-ish color?
They need to do something about the gearing or the turbo lag with the new 1.4L turbo engine.
I test drove the new Cruze. Great car, except the engine has a serious weakness for a second or two, before the power comes rushing in. I’ve driven turbos in the Ford Focus and VW Golf that didn’t have this weird personality. In those cars, the power was always there and very predictable. In the new Cruze, this weird engine behaviour is my biggest gripe.
Henry, I suspect that the Ford and VW Golf models you’re referring to are the high-performance ST and GTI models… that’s because the standard engine in all Focus models except for the ST and RS is a 2.0 NA (non turbo), and the 1.8T EA888 in the Golfs has a decent amount of lag off the line, comparable to that of the Cruze.
Nothing to do with gearing. It’s straight up turbo lag. These are economy cars, after all.
I really like this hatch. Looks much like the last Astra. With this said, why didn’t GM give Chevrolet the new Astra considering that, in today’s sales climate, the vehicle had little hope as a Buick?
Astra hatch would be a better Focus rival. The US should be selling a European car of the year!
Bummer that siren red is gone. Also by the looks of things that enticing color shown on the hatch wont be around either, just another suck you in and trick you one I guess. I still think they need to reassess the standards and options for each trim level too and make some adjustments.
Will the 2017 Cruze have adaptive cruise control and/or low-speed automatic (pedestrian) braking as options?
Would like to see the 2017 Cruze sedan with amber rear lamp turn signals.
