What Do You Want To See Next From The Sixth Generation Chevrolet Camaro? Community Question

We’re back from Nevada after driving the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro 2.0T, and we have to say, it’s going to definitely surprise you. We’ll have more on that soon, but for now, let’s pause for reflection. In less than a year, Chevrolet announced the following for the all-new, sixth-generation Camaro: V6, 2.0T, LT1 V8-powered SS model, respective convertible variants, a V6 1LE, and a V8 1LE. And they’re just starting to launch this thing. How far it will all go, or if this breakout pace will keep up during the life cycle of the Camaro Six remains to be the privileged knowledge of Al Oppenheiser and his crew of world-class engineers.

We’ve seen spy photos and videos of what could come next. Some would even call it a new Camaro ZL1, though nothing has been made official. That said, we want to ask you what you’re looking for in the new Camaro. What is it you want to see next, or eventually? Participate in our poll, and hash it all out in the comment section below.

    1. I’d like to add better styling from the rear. Hopefully the MCE fixes this as the styling is very weak from the rear. This actually applies to almost every GM car, they nail the front and do a great job from the side. All falls apart in the back.

  2. Visibility package with the new rearview camera mirror monitor.

    I think GM should offer a serious hybrid sports car, and it may share the same platform as the Camaro and ATS, but I don’t know if those nameplates would be a good fit.

    1. It seems that Camaro owners/lovers really hate the idea of visibility; but without a doubt there would be MORE Camaro owners/lovers if you could see out of the damn thing.

      1. Or maybe Camaro drivers have more skill and can use mirrors properly.

        This is a matter of taste. It is fine if you do not like the visibility but the fact is there have been and still are cars with much worse viability. Have you been in one of the new Lotus that has no rear window?

        In a car like a Camaro it is not much different than many other perfromance cars. There often is concessions due to the styling that is expected. Lambo has gone aggressive in styling and have always compromised the ride height and visibility.

        As for coupes in general. They all have compromised back seats but most people are accepting as that is just now part of being a coupe.

        These are cars that sell based on ego, styling and passion things the mini van and Camry or Accord are not subjected too since they are often seen as appliances by their owners.

        Having owned many difficult to see out of cars it is not hard to deal with once you are used to it. Adaption and the proper use of mirrors over come the issue.

        I do agree the bezels on the dash should be lowered but they are not impossible to deal with.

        GM will sell over 100K of these starting next year with a full year of production proving the styling has done its job.

        I ponder what some of you folks would do if you ever had to drive a truck with a cap or a van with no windows?

        1. So the funny thing is, the only feature I actually called out in the visibility package, the rear view mirror camera, would not change the outside styling/appearance one little bit!

          And yes, I have driven a 1 ton truck pulling a trailer where I couldn’t see anything. I did not like the feeling.

          1. That is fine if you do not like the feeling. That is your personal choice and that is fine.

            But keep things into perspective and understand in this case that this is not something in this segment that is a sales killer as you have tried to make it. Most people in this segment if given the choice of styling vs. a high roof and larger windows will take the styling and if anything a taller bulbous looking Camaro would suffer more sales.

            Most of the complaints about visibility would not be sold with a RVM camera. Generally the complaints are the low roof and the C pillar blind spots that even a 180 degree camera may not pick up.

            As for the one I was in you can see out the interior mirror just fine.

            As for the camera what do you do if it gets dirty or rain on it? I am interested in how GM will keep it clean in the CT6 as you drive. My back up camera now in the winter is useless much of the time with dirt or snow.

  3. What we will see is a Supercharged Camaro.

    It may not be what some want but that is what it will be.

    As for the visibility. Having owned older muscle cars from the 60’s visibility is not a problem here. Many of the old cars you could not see out of and you only had one manual out side mirror to see around C pillars even much larger than todays car.

    My 63 Ford had a outside mirror that was manual but it was mounted so far up on the door you could hardly see out of it.

    My Monte Carlo had C pillars you could hide a Semi in and only one remote outside mirror.

    To be honest with the back up cameras and the mirrors we have today these are far from difficult to drive.

    Anyone ever own and drive a 38 Chevy coupe with no outside mirror. That is fun!

    I suspect T tops are a thing of the past with chassis stiffness being important and with the addition of a good convertible.

    1LE 2.0 would be interesting if they offered a tune kit like GM performance did for the HHR and Cobalt.

    We will not see a Electric Camaro anytime soon. We could get a Electric sporty car but it would be a new model.

    z/28 is a given. We will get one in due time.

    More affordable V8. Noble idea but price will be come the limiting factor to drive more people to the other two option engines. The day is coming where they can not sell as many V8 engine be it CAFE or even Emissions. I expect the government at some point will slap a tax on large engines. So to limit their sales prices will stay high. Also the cost of these engines has grown. We get the performance from them as they are not the old simple small block they once were. Todays engines are very advanced and expensive to build.

    I you want more accessories that will negate a more affordable car. Best to leave this to Buick and their ability to sell a more expensive better optioned car. Lets face it most people willing to pony up big buck now already have a ZL1 or move to a Stingray.

    Sales of a really expensive Camaro is limited and they are already taking advantage of that. Options cost money.

It wouldn’t take much to replace the turbocharger unit of the LTG 2.0L DOHC-4v 4-cyl with a supercharger as it would allow the Camaro to be more responsive at low engine speed; although a twin-turbo setup similar to what European car companies do with a smaller turbocharger unit to handle low-rpm and then a larger turbo unit for mid-range to high engine speeds. The twin-turbo set up could allow the 2.0L 4-cyl engine to possibly crack the 300 hp mark, it’s unlikely that General Motors would consider doing so because of the expense; but GM needs to remember that such an engine just like the LTG wouldn’t be used just by the Camaro as it would be used by Cadillac’s ATS, CTS, CT6 and possibly even the new XT5.

    1. Do not under estimate the low end the low end of a 2.0 Turbo.

      You do understand the GM performance tune can set the engine at 295 HP and up to 340 FT LBS or torque from 1800 RPM to 5300 RPM? The only limitation of that set up was the transmission those vehicles to handle more.

      There is no need for Twin Turbos or supercharges as In my own car I have a difficult time getting the tires to hook up as it is.

      The LNF according to GM was good to 400 HP before it needed only new pistons and Rods and could go to 500 HP with no other modifications. The GM Ecotec book details the limits clearly.

      My First gear has so much torque now launch control is needed and even then the I have had the traction control kick in up to 55 MPH when hammer it. The first time it happened I thought I broke something when I lost boost and saw a light then realized it was the traction control light.

      I think the possibilities of this car will be amazing. Please look up the Solstice GM did with the 500 HP 2.0 that could easily be street driven.

      Many people just have no idea what this engine can do because GM has yet to tap all that is available in the production cars.

      1. Worse, they’re going backwards in the horsepower game. Yes, I know GMPD is gone… but every LNF car had a 290 hp Stage 2 tune, which maintained the full powertrain warranty.

        The fact that the Camaro doesn’t even offer that as an option, is quite boggling. LTG should not be inferior to LNF, but it is today in GM logic.

        1. Well first off GMPD is gone but the people are still there accept for a couple that retired.

          Bill Duncan who oversaw the kit has retired but his people are still working in drivetrain.

          I own this tune and being the Camaro is new I suspect we will see a tune once the cars hit the market. It was a very profitable thing for the dealers and not hard to install.

          Mine was two map sensors and a computer flash.

          If not companies like Trifecta will be out with tuners that you can buy. You may lose warranty possibly but most people who want these things will not be worried anyways.

          Note the Trifecta tune did not require the change of the Maps to 3 bar.

          Might also note they are not selling any dress up parts for the LTG or any other LTG related parts for the Camaro yet either. No cars no part as you have to let them get the car to market first.

          I would say they have had to wait mostly to the fact most cars tunes are set right before release.
          I would anticipate a kit maybe by fall.

  5. As much as I wanna see the next supercharged variant unveiled, I believe the Z/28 is the next model I’d like to see for the Camaro. Particularly the powertrain GM will employ to haul it around! One thing I really appreciate about the GT350/R is that Ford engineers developed an entirely new engine for the track-focused Mustang! I don’t expect GM to do same, seeing as to how they have a solid arsenal in the LT V8s! Perhaps a more powerful NA LT can be used for duty!

    But with all the talk about the coming 1LE being just as capable as the current Z/28 and GT350, I virtually see no need for a new Z/28 to be produced; plus I’d imagine the pricing would be absurd seeing as to how the current Z/28 had a starting price of $75K. So besides a new Z/28, I’d like to see a new T-Tops model! I was shocked when GM decided to not produce one for the 5th gen Camaro! This car is practically designed to have T-Tops! Plust it’ll be a good way to preserve some more of their muscle car heritage since most people associate T-Tops with the Camaro and Firebird anyway!

  6. I’d love to see a return to the ala carte cafeteria style order sheet when you could order the most bare bones base car and then add the top of the line V8 drivetrain.

  7. The last time I drove a Camaro, it was for one week as a dealer loaner and there were a lot of things I liked about it, but what I did not like about it were major. The extremely low belt line and small windows all around were major problems for me. The visibility was poor, though I have to say that the look from the outside of the car was aggressive and quite stylish. The other drawback was the interior which lacked style and suffered from a look of poor quality. Checking out a Mustang recently. those were two areas that Ford definitely was ahead of Chevrolet.

  9. I want to see an immediate redesign with a less-cartoonish look. Lower the belt-line, take out that hideous upward swipe of the C pillar. Make the roof and windows look more like a hardtop…like the first gen.

      I love the 1st Gen Camaro/Firebird…but that a car cannot be designed like that any longer.

      Cartoon-ish look?? the front end is very similar to the rest of Chevy’s line-up (Malibu & Cruze).

  11. I’d like to see an aesthetic redesign, getting back to the chiseled 5th gen look instead of the soft, generic, foreign 6th gen look.
    And clean up the interior. It’s too busy. Smooth things out and make it all look more integrated and flowing.

  13. ZL1 Convertible. Best of everything (including the view).

    My ’14 2SS/RS +50hp ‘vert is a fantastic car, a keeper in every way. But, the lighter alpha chassis coupled with…

    +the wonderful new top w/rigid tonneau

    Is very tempting.

  15. I’d like to see every option , engine, trim level and bit of technology in a vehicle the size of the SS sedan for no more than $4000 dollars more than the equivalent camaro. I’d take a 2LT with V6, Leather and sunroof even though I’d really try to justify the SS with the v8. 40k miles a year would mean I’d need the high end of EPA estimates for the LT1 engine to be a viable consideration.

  18. Honestly, as much as I’d like one this year, as it seems all the driving dynamics have changed for the better, the lack of a back seat is terrible. DIdn’t realize how bad until hitting the auto show last week and our 6 year old couldn’t get her feet in the space between the back seat and the front seat.

    She was sitting behind the driver, and i’m only 6’0. Can’t justify it at all to the wife in that regard.

    The Mustang has more space, and that’s not an option, so it’d have to be a 2015 or earlier. ATS can sit on that platform (yes I know modified) and have an adequate seat, GM could shave some inches off the front of the car and move it to the cabin. Not asking for a sedan or stretch out leg room but when a child can’t sit back there for any length of time, nevermind an adult with no place to put their legs, its an issue that no other Camaro has had to that degree.

    While I’d be eying an older ZL1 myself, an N/A Z28 should be the only additional model they make in this body style. A z28, z28 convertible, and Z28 1LE/track package. The Z28 track package to it if you want A/C and Radio delete. Hell, remove the back seat in the Z28 track package too.

    Also, for 2017 and the 50th, bring back some 1967 colors for a limited run…exterior AND interior!

  19. I love the camaro but its getting so expensive.

    I have always disliked mustangs but they are sooo tempting!

    The Rousch shops are selling 650 HP 5.0 Mustangs for $39.9k NEW
    The GT with 435 H and 400 lb-ft of torque starts at 32,600.

    The camaro on the other hand starts at 37,295, for 455 HP and 455 lb-ft of torque.
    To get a Camaro into the 600s is more expensive than the rousch program.

    So in other words, the Camaro is SO expensive for what you get, I’m getting tempted by a mustang. It is 14.4% more expensive and you get 4.60% more power. So its not price competitive any way you look at it. If you want great value power, get the Rousch. if you want best bang for the lowest price, go with the mustang GT. The only reason I’d pick the camaro is because I’m a “Chevy fanboi” (Which I am)

    The Roush is $61.38/HP
    The Base GT is $74.94/HP
    The Base SS is $81.96/HP

    I know a lot of Camaro fans are going to say, “There’s more to performance than power”

    Yes and No.

    Full disclosure: I have owned 4 camaros, including 2 5th gens, an SS and an LS. I have also owned corvettes. I have never owned a Ford except for trucks.
