Nearly 30 Percent Of Chevy Sonic Buyers Trade In Non-GM Vehicles

Having just announced the freshened 2017 Chevrolet Sonic, the Bowtie brand also shared the following stats regarding the subcompact car range.

  1. The Sonic is Chevy’s top vehicle for first-time new car buyers.
  2. Over 20 percent of Sonic customers are younger than 35.
  3. Nearly 30 percent of Sonic buyers trade in non-GM vehicles.

The GM Authority Take

Those stats are quite impressive given ever-increasing competition in the subcompact passenger car space. In fact, that kind of performance is exactly what Chevy needs to stay relevant with Gen-X and Millennial customers.

That said, here’s to hoping that Chevrolet is taking advantage of opportunities to introduce Sonic owners to (and sell) other vehicles in the Chevrolet portfolio if/when the time is right.

  1. Considering that ~28% of the US population is between the ages of 15-35, Chevy’s claim that 20% of Sonic drivers are in that coveted age demographic isn’t that impressive. In other words, they’re doing slightly worse than population distribution.

    1. Wrong. You need to look at the percentage of the US population between the ages of 15-35 who are capable of buying a new car. Since a large part (roughly a third) of the people are not capable of buying a new car, they are actually doing quite well.

      1. And the point isn’t how many customers are or are not within a certain demographic. The real story here is that the Sonic brings in a lot of customers who are new to Chevy and to GM. That’s item number 3 in the list above.
