Chevy Camaro’s 1LE Package Through The Years: History Alley

Chances are that by now, you have already had a chance to salivate over the new 2017 Camaro 1LE. The package takes the already-capable sixth-gen Camaro and turns its handling prowess up to 11. But how did the Camaro 1LE come about, and how did it look throughout the years? Read on for a brief walk through history lane.

Third-Gen Camaro 1LE

It all starts with the third-gen. Chevy developed the 1LE package in 1988 to make the Camaro more competitive in Showroom Stock road racing series. The package officially debuted in 1989. Only four examples are known to have been built in 1988 and 111 were built in 1989.

Fourth-Gen Camaro 1LE

The 1LE package was featured on fourth-gen Camaros through the 1999 model year.

Fifth-Gen Camaro 1LE

The 1LE returned to the fifth-gen Camaro in 2013 and ran through its last model year in 2015. Available exclusively on the Coupe body style on the SS V8 model with manual transmission, the fifth-gen 1LE offered:

  • Matte black-wrapped hood
  • (RSK) 20″ x 10″ front and 20″ x 11″ rear aluminum wheels wrapped in (RKC) 285/35ZR20 performance summer-only blackwall tires
  • (D52) unique rear spoiler
  • (GW1) 3.91 axle
  • (FE6) 1LE Performance suspension
  • 6-speed manual transmission
  • (KS9) sueded microfiber-wrapped shift knob
  • (N26) sueded microfiber-wrap

The 1LE makes a return in the sixth-gen Camaro for the 2017 model year. Available on the SS V8 and, for the first time ever, on the LT V6, the 2017 Camaro 1LE offers:

2017 Camaro LT 1LE

  • Available on the 1LT and 2LT trim levels
  • Mechanical:
    • 3.6L LGX V6 rated at 335 horsepower mated to six-speed manual transmission
    • FE3 suspension components (from the Camaro SS), including dampers, rear cradle mounts, ball-jointed rear toe links and stabilizer bars
    • Brembo 4-piston front brake calipers
    • Mechanical limited-slip differential with 3.27 ratio
    • Standard track-cooling package, with engine oil, differential and transmission coolers
    • Camaro SS fuel system for higher-load cornering capability
    • Standard dual mode exhaust system
  • Exterior:
    • Unique, black 20-inch forged aluminum wheels
    • Goodyear Eagle F1 tires with a unique compound and construction developed exclusively for the Camaro for exceptional grip on the track:
      • 245/40R20 in the front and
      • 275/35R20 in the rear
    • Satin black hood, front splitter and unique three-piece rear spoiler
    • Unique high flow upper and lower grille with satin black accents
  • Interior:
    • Available Recaro seats
    • Suede steering wheel
    • Shorter-throw shifter
    • Available Performance Data Recorder (PDR)

2017 Camaro SS 1LE

  • Available on the 1SS and 2SS trim levels
  • Mechanical:
    • 6.2L LT1 V8 rated at 455 horsepower mated to six-speed manual transmission (automatic transmission not available)
    • FE4 suspension system with Magnetic Ride Control, with specific tuning for the Magnetic Ride dampers, springs and stabilizer bars
    • Track-cooling package, with engine oil, differential and transmission coolers
    • Segment-exclusive electronic limited-slip differential with 3.73 ratio
    • Brembo brakes with new six-piston monobloc front red calipers with 1LE logo and two-piece rotors measuring 14.6 inches (370mm) in diameter. In fact, the front rotors of the 2017 Camaro SS 1LE are 7 percent larger those of the standard Camaro SS
    • Standard dual mode exhaust system
  • Exterior:
    • Unique, black 20-inch forged aluminum wheels
    • Goodyear Eagle F1 tires with a unique compound and construction developed exclusively for the Camaro for exceptional grip on the track:
      • 285/30ZR20 in the front and
      • 305/30ZR20 in the rear
    • Satin black hood, front mirrors and unique three-piece rear spoiler
    • Satin Graphite front splitter and rear diffuser
  • Interior:
    • Standard Recaro front seats with aggressive bolsters optimized for shifting and steering comfort
    • Suede steering wheel
    • Suede shorter-throw shifter
    • Available Performance Data Recorder (PDR)

    No, SS 1LE is only available on 1SS, not on 2SS. This past Thursday I purchased a summit white SS 1LE

    You can configure on chevy’s website to verify.

  3. And yes, to be clear, it is available on V6, though I believe
    only on the 2LT.
