Yesterday, photos emerged all over the internets of camouflaged 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 (possibly 3500) Heavy Duty pickup. The guise was rather light and only in the front, pointing that the 2017 Silverado HD is far from an all-new model. At least from a sheetmetal standpoint. Underneath the brawny skin, however, we may find ourselves some significant updates.
Rumor is that we could see a highly reworked, if not all new, 6.6L Duramax V8 diesel engine. We may also see new transmissions, perhaps by Allison Transmission, to handle the expected increases in power and torque. And what goes with the 2017 Silverado HD, we should also expect to see out of the 2017 GMC Sierra HD as well. Of course, this is all speculation.
For now, we’ll turn things to you. Are you looking for significant mechanical updates out of the 2017 GM HD trucks? Are you looking for more than just that? Participate in our poll, and talk it out in the comments below.

usability improvements! i sell them so i have an idea of what people want and like. the corner step bumper has been really popular so stuff like that.
I completely agree Rob. With Duramax and Allison GM already has the best power-train combo.
HP and Torque numbers are just for advertising. GM has had the lowest HP & TQ numbers for a few years but still outperforms Ford and RAM.
Sorry for the poor formatting.

I would like see a straight axle Front suspension on the 4×4 ( ala Ford and Ram ) and more power.
Gmc pickups ride as well as they do because of the a- frame suspension they have beneath them. Also, GM doesn’t have to worry about death wobble like ford and Dodge.
Having had a 2001 Ram 2500 with a Cummins I eventually tired of the rough ride and death wobble when the track bar would wear. One of the scariest experiences you can imagine!
I have owned Fords since the beginning….I never wanted to buy a Chevy or any GM product…mostly because all my friends drove them. But, after buying an F350 dually diesel crewcab in 2005, and living through the 6.0L worries and, yes, experiencing the death wobble several times….I am now looking at either the Silverado or Sierra 3500HD. Haven’t driven one yet, but that will be soon. I have to agree with Edward, the death wobble will scare the crap out of you. Only way to cure it is to slow to about 40 and wait for it to stop. Oh, and the wonderfully written letter from Ford telling me that there wasn’t a problem with the truck that caused the death wobble (not their words exactly) and to make sure to keep the air in the tires correct, they have finally pushed me over to GM.
Powertrain; more efficient with greater HP and torque. Be better than the Powerstroke and the Cummings – a new transmission with more gears for improved fuel economy
Useability: all the latest electronic aides. Make the truck a mobile office
Powertrain: I’d like to see a gas engine that has more power and better mpg!! The 6.0 is very reliable but 10 mpg doesn’t cut it anymore. Get the 6.2, hd 8speed, and stop start. Even if it went to 16 that’s a huge improvement.
Additional features: Make Bluetooth with steering wheel controls standard! That’s about the best feature ever and everyone I know won’t live without it. I like the mobile office idea with more storage and plugs. I hope they don’t look at ford. Do you really need that camera in the grill with a freakin washer? Chevy has a nice simple truck that has everything you need and nothing more and that’s what I like.
Make a frame that offers both IFS and SFA 4WD option and watch Ford sales flush down the toilet as fast as you can pull the handle.
I just bought a 2016 Denali 1500 with the 6.2 / 8 Speed combo. Amazing!!! I am actually getting better fuel economy than when I had the 5.3 / 6 Speed combo. So, for the new HDs, I agree with Cam – better fuel economy from a gasser. I also think GM needs climate control for the back seat so that would be a nice addition to all their trucks.
Id love to see the HP and torque increases as well as a 8 speed transmission. Rear climate controls for the rear seat are long overdo! Also id really love to see a camera placed with the cargo light for ease of hooking up goose neck trailers!!!
If GM is going to hold onto the 6.0 for its gas HD trucks, Hopefully they will upgrade to the 8 or 10 speed tranny.
I think a lot of info is being left out here. The “internets” is a funny thing.
The new engines are most likely being tested in old style trucks, because the old style was readily available. When the 2017 comes out, it will look like the 1500 with a larger front bumper spacer between the steel and the headlights.
I really doubt that the duramax has been entirely reworked. That doesn’t make sense because there is nothing wrong with the current configuration. Maybe some strengthening changes to the block casting, and surely a new injection/fuel delivery setup, with a compression/head tweak.
For all of you bro’s out there thinking that the numbers are going to be 500 horsepower/1000 torque, grow up. It isn’t going to happen.
Even if Fords new numbers come out astronomical, GM will sit back and watch Ford sink millions into warranty repairs.
Real world we are looking at 435-445 horsepower and 905 torque. Tops.
And that will be fine, because they are the best trucks made.
Ill be picking one up, no matter the numbers.
Better gas engine. Crome option for the steel wheels on work trucks. Make the entry level dash without the touch screen. Move the urea tank! Hide it somewhere, anywhere I don’t care but a $50,000 plus truck with an ugly plastic tank hanging under the passenger door is just plain stupid.
Wouldn’t mind seeing the DEF tank relocated. Directly behind the passenger front tire makes zero sense to me.
I would love a SFA option, move the DEF tank to a less obvious location. Even better would be get rid of the DPF all together nothing but a headache. I would also like to see a little more class on the dash of the LTZ and higher optioned trucks. Thought the 2015 buttons and switches were a little tacky and cheap looking.
Im a Crewcab with an 8ft bed buyer and they sit to darn low give us the option to choose the stance instead of just LOW. Tougher bumpers these current ones are like tin foil. Lastly bring back two-tone paint options and 100k warranty.
I would like to see some real good rebates on the 2016 Denali 2500 diesel. And yes the def tank needs to be moved it looks funny were it is. Also heated rear seats for the passengers would be great. Love the ride of the new truck it beats my Ford F-350 hands down.
Move the def tank to where the fuel tank is and put the def fill tube in the fuel door hate to say it but like the ford. And give the option of a straight axle with manual lock outs not automatic for a couple miles per gallon for highway mileage of course
I think the new 10 speed trans will be the answer.
Inside info states we will see a new 6.6 with a lot of changes. Bigger turbo and new fuel system are just some. DEF is still on the truck, power numbers were too low with a non DEF engine. The test trucks spotted here and there are the old body style. I can’t give any specifics but there are some teasers for ya’ll.
Need HD. The current 3500 is weak ,we need a truck that compares with ford f550 or the ram 5500. I can’t replace my 3500Hd flatbed that has 15000lbs gvw ,GM does not have a truck that could be used for flatbed or tow truck. Embarrassing
I would like to see a direct injected 7.0 Liter V8 ( 427 ) gas engine paired up with the Allison Automatic. The gap is to big between the 6.0 Liter and the Duramax 6.6. I have a 8.1 Liter with the Allison Automatic and love it. Its 13 years old and time for a new one.
I’d like to see a turbo gas engine nothing wrong with 6.0 liter other than under powered for that truck twin or single turbo with 4 to 6 psi would make that motor incredible without compromising durability the man who invented the combustion engine invented forced induction for a reason. Ive had a saturn sky for 8 years with the turbo 2.0 290 hp 340 trq with the factory tune this car has been driven harder than 90% of the cars out there and after 8 years of torture no engine problems i noticed it burning a little oil so bought a $50 turbo rebuild kit and fixed it in an afternoon! If a motor 1/3 the size running over 3 times the boost can hold up like that why cant the 6.0 take it.
i would like to see def tank moved, head up display, adaptive cruise on denali line this is whats keeping me from pulling the trigger.
A navigation system that updates like a Garmin, not once a year for $160. Yep I know if you spend $70,000 for a truck what’s $160, a pain, that’s what it is…
We definitely need climate control in the back seats. It is just ridiculous we don’t have this yet. Please update soon. I’m in the market next year.
Agreed long over due. When your spending 88k on a Denali it should be standard to have heated rear seats!!!
How about a camera to aid with goose neck Trailer hook ups?
How about instead of spending so much time developing new transmissions they get with eaton and build a 2 speed rear like whats been used in semis for years taking the proven 6 speed allison and giving u 12 forward gears. Not new technology have used them a million times they were air actuated on a manual but im sure gm can make a computer controlled version that would be seamless. It would be a towing monster big plus competition doesnt have it or anything close.
You just added 6 to 7 thousand to the MSRP with that one.
A big gas engine!
Folks don’t hold your breath on this one. If you look at all the manufacturers the trend is towards smaller and turbocharged engines in 1/2 tons and pushing users towards diesel in the heavy duty trucks. The manufacturers are facing a huge hurdle making these CAFE standards that are coming up and going to larger gas V8’s just goes counter to that.
