Rubens Barichello will race alongside Max Angelelli and Jordan and Ricky Taylor in the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Konica Minolta Corvette DP in this weekend’s Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Barichello, 43, is one of the most experienced Formula 1 drivers in history with 300 Grand Prix starts, 11 wins and 68 podiums. He raced in the Rolex 24 at Daytona last year in the No. 7 Starworks Motorsport Riley-BMW, however engine problems took the car out of the race. The year before that, he raced a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car at Daytona but failed to finish.
This year Barichello will be in a much more competitive ride in the way of the No. 10 Corvette DP. He got in talks with the WTR squad through longtime friend Angelelli, whom he raced with in the early 1990s in Formula 3. The veteran racing driver says he’s hoping he can contribute to a winning effort this year and lock down his first Daytona win.
“When I was here in the Brazilian Porsche it was disastrous; they weren’t ready at all,” Barichello told Sportscar365. “But we learned the track, and learned the race.”
“Last year with Starworks it was something very cool that might have happened. But it was a late call there.”
“For me to jump into a competitive car, I just hope I can contribute to be able to get to victory lane.”
