Yesterday, Chevrolet revealed its planned 2016 North American International Auto Show debut early in the form of the 2017 Cruze hatchback.
We’ll let you head over here to the reveal story for storage space and other technicals, because right now we merely want to discuss exterior design in today’s hot or not.
The vast majority of design changes are at the rear of the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze hatch. As a brief summation, the GM Authority staff thinks it looks quite good, but our staff impressions have ranged from “I swear from the back I’m looking at a Kia”, to “it has the profile of an Astra J hatch” and even “it reminds of the previous-generation Mazda3 hatchback.”
Even with all of that said, we do think it’s a good looking, cohesive design. But, if you’re not a fan of the how the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze sedan looks, you most likely won’t be in love with the 2017 Cruze hatchback.
So, we’ll turn it to you now. Do you think the 2017 Cruze hatch is a real design winner, or is a stylistics loser? Vote in our poll, and talk to us in the comment section below.

It’s a blatant rip off of the Ford Focus ST!
Ford Fan,
With all due respect, and being as unbiased as I can be knowing we’re an independent publication from General Motors, I really don’t see any similarities to the Ford Focus, or the ST variant here. I really see a lot of previous-generation Opel Astra in this design. And, to me, that’s not really a bad thing.
I also invite you to check out Ford Authority, one of our sister publications, to keep up on everything from the Blue Oval!
Cheers,
Sean
There are never any comments in the Ford Authority stories so that’s why Ford Fan came here. He just wants some conversation.
There are no comments in the Chrysler section, either.
Does that mean that GM has a larger following than Ford or Chrysler?
Yes! GM has more followers!
It does look a lot like the last generation Astra which is a very good thing.
I notice that GM is making an effort to make Opel and Chevy designs not identical but similar enough to be mixed and matched depending on local market.
Had this Cruze been presented as Astra J, I highly doubt that anyone would have considered the vehicle a misfit.
With that said, I expect to see defiantly Bolt and probably Volt sold along side Spark on Opel lots. We’ve all been focused on the Opel-Buick hyper-brand and failed to notice something similar happening with Chevrolet.
Four Buick’s (minimum), three Chevy transplants and two PSA JV built models makes Opel a truly global brand.
It’s a looker. Now they just need a more potent engine and suspension setup to have a real “hot hatch” to compete with the other already out there.
What about the 2.0L Diesel. That thing got some kick to it!
ford fan saw only color- same color same car ahhaaaa but thats not so easy
I really think they should do a coupe version of the cruze and offer it with a optional manual transmission. Personally I believe it sell like hot cakes
I look at this car and think it’s really a Chevy Trax. That Chris Christie sat on top of.
I like what I see, an do plan to buy one, it reminds me of a mini Malibu Maxx which was my last Chevy I traded on ’13. If I could have had just one wish on the read end design I’d would have liked to see the back more wagonish/squared to increase the interior volume a bit. I don’t think GM realizes how large this segment is in the marketplace. I foresee quite a few LS models being sold to the auto parts retailers like NAPA for instance for delivery vehicles.
I think it’s great that Chevrolet is finally going to make a Cruze Hatchback in the States. I think GM ought to put a 2.0 turbo 4 cylinder in the Cruze Hatchback as a higher output engine option as another way to appeal to car enthusiasts.
