It’s official: the Buick Envision is coming to North America in 2016. Also buried in the announcement is that the 2016 Buick Envision will be produced in China and imported into the United States and Canada.
The news comes after weeks of speculation and calls from the United Auto Workers union for General Motors to “build where it sells.” The tone of the announcement, however: the 2016 Envision has been designed, engineered and tested in Michigan, despite it being “made in China“.
Outside of all that: the 2016 Buick Envision will bridge the gap between the compact Encore and full-size Enclave when it arrives next year. It will be powered by the a 2.0-liter LTG turbocharged four-cylinder engine 262 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque mated to GM’s six-speed Hydra-Matic 6T70 automatic transmission. It will also be Buick’s first crossover to feature the HiPer Strut front suspension as well as an advanced Active Twin Clutch all-wheel-drive system.
Envision highlights include:
- 252-horsepower (186 kW) 2.0L turbo engine with stop/start technology, matched with Buick’s first crossover vehicle application of HiPer Strut front suspension and Buick’s first Active Twin Clutch all-wheel-drive system
- Efficiency-enhancing features including upper grille shutters that open and close to enhance aerodynamics on the highway and a body structure incorporating mass-reducing high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels – and a lightweight aluminum hood

Oh man! Here comes the barrage of criticism, disgust, disdain, frustration, betrayal (by few), and languish over this decision!
I’m just gonna keep my mouth shut! I’m not a business man or authority figure in this decision and therefore am unqualified to spew my opinion towards the matter! I’ll let the faithful GM customers, investors, the taxpaying citizens, politics of the United States, and the happy Chinese workers who’ll benefit from this boost of work answer the matter….
I just can’t believe how many CUV’s are out there.
These things are all over the road……the modern station wagon/minivan.
Most people buy their icrap from Apple even though it is made in China. GM is outsourcing jobs cause they are an greedy company like the rest.
icrap? The company with the highest satisfaction ratings in the technology industry and in any sector it competes in makes “crap” according to Dale. Nice.
Regardless, it’s only a consumer electronics manufacturer. There’s absolutely no need to worship it or any corporate organization, even GM.
Time to stop this greedy corporation bull Shit.
#1 Why do companies go into business?
To just give people jobs? NO!
To give you new cars to buy only? No!
Just because they like providing a service? No!
Companies go into business to make money like it or not it is called capitalism! It has good and bad parts to it but we have seen more good than bad and it has made America a better place to live because of it.
The fact is because of it even our lower 10% have it much better than the top 90% in Russia.
So stop the brain washing repeating message labor speak cooperation’s are greedy. If you has not skipped Economics class you would have better understood the world, how it works and your 401k would be work a damn good bit of money.
Time for the people of this country to stop waiting for the free ride and start learning to be competitive again.
You want to get a head invest in a solid skill or education and not a union bosses investment fund.
GM sure has a short memory doesn’t it? GM should have upgraded the north american plants in time for a worldwide launch in sync with china and north america. Clearly they have no regard for supporting local work, and you can bet there will be zero north american parts being used in china. GM sure abuses it’s customers and home taxpayer base.
Your analysis of American business is correct. The US government should have followed France’s example (Renault & PSA) by maintaining stock ownership in an effort to protect worker’s and the nation’s industrial base.
Only consumers can teach GM that building in China is bad business: Don’t buy Envision! Importing from allied S Korea is acceptable; importing from a nation with whom we are locked in an arms race that, in addition, has no respect for human rights is disgraceful.
China knows that globalism is dead. When will America catch on?
Yes and look where that has gotten them. The French auto industry is a total mess. PSA is looking for a partner and even FCA does not want them. Nissan controls most of the rest.
The whole deal here is in the hands of the American workers and if they want to compete.
You act as if America is entitled to the work the fact is you have to earn it by many different ways. The entitlement is what got you where you are now.
Time to stop listing to the fake union lines of the past.
In the world you either learn to complete or you become Great Brittan or France and have only cottage industries that can compete globally.
Second you need to let this play out and just see what the full plan is. They are only building a limited volume here. This tend to lead me to believe they will move the production there once a line is started. The Nox Is not going into production by the time the Buick does. GM has to facilitate bringing a product to market earlier moved to import limited models before like the Regal till product is established here.
As for human rights it has been a problem in China for nearly 90 years. The fact is now they are a major player in the economy of the world. By inserting themselves into the economy you are going to have to deal with them or face major issues of your own. Pandora is out of the box and you are not going to put it back in.
There are a lot of countries doing things we do not like but we are not going to change it.
If you really cared you would stop our government from borrowing money from China to try to pay for all they spend. That there alone is what is causing the mess. Now I heard one of the candidates speak and she wants to spend billions upon billions on more projects and programs while not raising taxes on the middle Class? Well the rich alone can not foot the bill and corporations will leave. One drug firm just went to Ireland.
While some of you hear have noble reasons to say what we should do the reality does not follow. The rules here are much different and the fact is America is not the only game in town anymore as we have been put in a position of weakness militarily and economically over the last few years.
WW3 has started but this time it is economical. We are not fighting this one with bullets and bombs but with jobs and money.
Scott, do you think that China has government entities such and the Labor Department, the EPA, the National Labor Relations Board. OSHA, Department of Transportation ect. The American people can compete in productivity and cost against any fair playing field. But when you are competing with a country for example that accepts 3,700 coal miners killed a year in mine accidents how can our Corporations compete. If by some tragedy 10 US Coal miners perish we would demand action and rightfully so. Beijing is so polluted it looks like late afternoon at sun rise. Do you think our Steel Industries, Chemical Industries could get away with the levels of pollutants that the Chinese industries do. Our Corporations go to China because it is cheaper to produce their products but not simply because the wages or cheaper. They have no liability no worries of OSHA fines, EPA regulations, Labor Laws. Get Foreign Countries to agree to comply with our regulations for Safety, Environment and Labor laws (and I don’t mean UNION) and see how we can compete.
No they don’t and they hold a very competitive edge because of it. But that does not change the fact they are the largest and fastest growing consumer market in the world.
If you are in business you either participate with the Devil or you die. Not a great two choices but there is only one you can make.
We are not going to change them and they will laugh at you if you try. The fact is China has most of the global community by the family jewels.
The only thing in our favor is they need us to survive. With out us their unstable economy collapses. As long as we are of value to therm we are safe What I worry about is if we become totally irrelevant.
We have to remember we are not dealing with another America. They are not a country that will cower to us and will do what they want to do reguardless of what we do. We need to seek any advantage we can and make what ever deals we can in at our advantage.
In the mean time we need to stop trying to make villans of corperations as they are our way out here. If we make thing more attaractive here to make products they will invest here. It is not unlike a car company make or offer a better product or deal and you will make the sale. Time for America to learn how to compete again and stop waiting for the world to come to us.
We have had it too easy and too good for too long. We are lazy and weaker because of it. We can gain this back but we need to learn to compete again glovbally.
Scott, you make some good points regarding the structure of a Consumer based Economy. But you seem to forget that the engine that drives that type of economy is the middle class not the poor or wealthy. Millionaires and Billionaires are not going to purchase this $40,000 Buick and neither are the poor. We have lost over 14,000 manufacturing jobs in the state of Illinois and over 9,000 in Michigan since February of 2015. Employment numbers are up but look at the jobs fast food, delivery, truck driving. All of which are solid careers but not the type needed to purchase homes, cars, vacations, furniture, appliances. Eventually when those brilliant Corporations (by the way that were bailed out by the citizens of this country in 2009) send the rest of the middle class jobs to out sources we will see what that savings is going to do their sales. Just the thoughts of an old Econ Professor with a PHD from Stanford..
That is the big lie. The rich are what make a economy hum. If the rich do well they spend money. They build companies, invest and hire people. This is what creates the middle class.
Who do you think the Middle class works for and is employed by? Yes too many by the non productive government but it is industry and business that drives middle class and it is mostly owned and controlled buy people who have money.
My job is a perfect example where one rich man own the company but we all enjoy a middle to upper middle class income because of his investment into the company. While my boss may drive a Z06 I and my co workers are the ones buying the $40K Buick or in my case GMC. We have has a lot of ATS showing up in the lot too.
I live here in the mid west and saw all the jobs leave. Why did they leave because someone else wanted them more. Other parts of the US and now overseas wanted to be more competitive and that is where the work went. We are now gaining it back and people here are getting jobs with a fair wage again. No they will not become millionaires but if you work a production line you should not hold this kind of expectation.
As it is now the restaurant jobs are being cut here with minimum wage going up. many places are letting people go or just not replacing them. Kids are not finding cheap work to gain experience.
The fact is if you are not making the money you like then get a better education and or a better skill. I paid my own way through collage and worked some tough jobs to get where I am. Life is open to all to make with it as you like but how hard are you willing to work for it. I know many who have made it with no hand out or silver spoon and most of it was done the old fashion way hard work and improving yourself.
A lot of mistakes have been played over the years with MFG, Unions and workers in general. At this point we have the cards we are deal and we could sit and complain about China while they laugh at us or we can learn to compete against them and work to gain back our advantage. Those companies that are leaving give them a reason to stay. If we have better skills, knowledge and work ethics it would give them a reason to stay. As it is now most companies can not even get people to show up on time let alone daily.
Well I an appreciate your views but in being a professor did you ever really work out in a real company? Did you ever have to answer to a board of directors and or share holders on profits?
Did you ever have to deal with Unions that would want paid for 8 hours but only work 6 hours. Yes this did happen in Akron Ohio a the tire factories that are now closed down. {Note the companies went to 6 hour shifts in the depression to help employ more people. In the 1970’s they asked for the two hours a day back and were told no way.
Those jobs went south where people gave them 8 hours for 8 hours of pay.
I have seen this issue first hand as my grand father face it as well as my father before me. I chose to go a different direction and good thing as where they were is no longer there.
Today I deal with people globally and I see first hand what they can do and are willing to do. It makes me sad as people here are not willing to do what it takes anymore.
It is not a matter of if but when hard times come it is going to be a dangerous place and era to live. Too many taking the easy way out.
Either way if it were not for the rich families that paid Stanford to educate their kids you would not have had as long of a run there as you did. The middle class did not add much to their coffers out of their pockets.
There is no Utopia unless you are Todd Rungren.
FYI kick Iowa’s butt! Stanford has a much better team. LOL!
Rick I might add it takes all classes to make this whole deal work not just rich, not just middle class and not just poor. From what I was taught and have learned it takes all classes.
China used to be a one class society. All share equally in pain and all shared equally in misery. That is the socialistic way. Today if we observe they have had to let more people join into a classed society with many more middle and now even rich people that own many of the companies yet also shared with the government.
While China has many great human failures they have moved closer to our way but still try to keep a grip on their people.
Well some folks just need to get a grip and deal with the realities.
First off they had said they were only bringing in 35K units.
Second they may open a line here once the Nox goes into production and this model could join it like the Regal.
Third this model will be built as well as anything on any other GM line regardless of origin.
Fourth This is more about economics. as you would have a challenge building a small number of models here alone. Second people will not buy it if you charged for the added cost of the small volume. Damned if you do Damned if you don’t.
Finally I hate this as much as anyone. But this is how the new auto industry is going to operate. Ford is down to two cars going to be built in the US the Mustang, and Conti. Jeep is importing product from Italy. Buick is going to import the Convertible from Poland etc. We will see more and more global product as yes companies are global and are required by share holders to make money. No profits your stock tanks and you will not be around long.
As for the other countries they are willing to challenge us for out work. If you want it back we need to become competitive again. It again is simple economics. They will take our lunch and eat it so unless you fight back. If you don’t want to fight don’t complain.
There is a large segment that do not care where things are made and they already buy thing from all over. Just look at the Korean cars as they should have never lasted the first 5 years but price kept bringing people back. Buick has already made much profit on the Encore from Korea and they will make money here even at a low volume. That is what it is all about. Harsh but true.
Everyone hates Walmart but most continue to shop there as they will not pay more for products. Again harsh but true.
My hope is this will move to Canada once the Ingersoll line is up and running. As of now they could not add this as they have not made the change to the new platform yet. I wager this may be what we see if sales go well.
But again do not underestimate the quality of China. They can do things as well as anyone else at a non harbor freight price. Just look where your Cell Phone was made and consider that.
I would hope they move the Tawasha as there are a lot of worried people there and very little product. On top of that they go towards coming out of their ass and deserve it
Nothing is deserved it has to be earned. Or in this case negotiated.
Today a plant and local UAW or in this case CAW need to make sure they are producing a good product but they also need to compete with other locals and plants for work.
The locals need to negotiate a fair deal and often they are rewarded long term. This is not like the old days where they hold a company hostage for all they can get anymore as over capacity has given the MFG room to work and find a fair deal for both sides.
Oshawa will get what they negotiate for. They will get a fair deal if they make a fair offer.
Note how Lordstown has gone from a hostile plant to a plant that works with GM now. They have been rewarded multiple times with a good solid product and many hours of extra work. The plant is large and not the most efficient but they have made it efficient with their work and their deals. From what I have been reading the CAW needs to stop the tough talk and start working with GM not against GM.
Economic realities do need addressing. This is a short term solution for GM, but also a trial balloon to test buyer reaction.
China heavily tariffs US made autos making them cost prohibitive in the market. For China, free trade is a one way street to be enjoyed until the US realizes the dream of Globalism died in the 1990s.
Free trade is great provided it is conducted among allies for the common growth and good. High levels of trade with State Capitalist China is all about short term gain and greed while in the long term dangerous for US economic and national security.
Has the US become wealthier since the opening of China? No
Trial balloon prove it.
The problem you leave out here is that China has the largest growing market of consumers in the world. It has gotten to the point you must participate there not to get rich but to survive.
The MFG that try to go it with out China will struggle and many will die while others will survive as the rest of the global market is just not enough anymore to survive.
China has constructed this to where they are made a partner in this and if you do business there they have an active roll. It is not what any MFG wants but to survive you have to accept the terms as the number of Chinese consumers is dangled there.
It is not about the US becoming wealthier here it is about the US surviving globally and remaining relevant. Much of our industry was eliminated long ago and others now hold it.
While we held an advantage at one time we are not in a weaker position. Sure we could just try to ignore the China market but it will doom us to failure as others fill out gaps. The loans we have will always keep us tied.
The fact is the deal witht he devil has been made and we need to exploit any gaps we can find to compete anymore.
Our biggest issue is we have people in Washington that have no clue how to deal with them. To gain back any edge we will need leverage and right now we have little,
This problem is much bigger than importing cars or cell phones. We have some major decisions to make here and the people of America need to show if they are willing to do what it takes to bring any advantage back.
We have had it easy and good for so long many here do not understand what it means to work hard or sacrifice anymore. We need to learn from those who lived in the depression as we could hit that again if we do not change our ways.
I wish this was as simple as you like to make it as it is too difficult for me to lay this out here is a small post.
Actually we went though a economic down turn that would have crashed many economies if it has not been for our strong corporations.
Much of why GM is doing better today than FCA after the bail out is they have had strong sales in China where FCA is pretty much unknown.
GM has improved here but their global foot print has facilitated their recovery much more than most others.
Do I like dealing with China No!!! At this point the deal has already been made with the devil and you either work with them or you struggle with out them. The largest market in the world is calling. Not everyone there is slave labor and people there are trying to buy the luxury things they never had for nearly 80 years.
Much of China was backward farmers but today that is changing fast.
The greatest danger to the world right now is they over run their economy and it fails. If it does it is large enough to take many other markets with it. We may not be friends but China and America but have mutual interest.
Much like it was with Russia in the cold war. What kept each side in check was to know if a war broke out the economy of the world would crash. The way the world is stuttered today mutual economic destruction is a deterrent. The real issue today is groups like ISSI know this too and they have little skin in the game.
This deal is much more complex than you want to make it. Isolationism just can not be done anymore.
The Encore’s from Korea.
Envision’s from China.
Mexico makes Chevys.
Just the way it is.
Glad my tax dollars helped bail out the General so that they could bring the first Chinese built vehicle to these shores. Will stick with my Benz made in Alabama. Go American manufacturing!
Where do the profits made from your US-built Benz go? Which country do they end up in?
If you expect other countries to buy our products then we have to buy theirs.
The Chinese produced Envision is a temporary thing. I am certain that when production begins on the Equinox/Terrain that GM will shift production to NA along with offering a FWD base model.
Fret not folks, since Buick is in desperate need of a midsized crossover GM could not wait until Equinox/Terrain started production. Importing from China allows them to get it to market quicker and test the waters for acceptance of a new model. Envision will be produced in NA in about a year.
As previously stated, this will be the first of many Buicks imported from China. With China being far and away the #1 market for Buick, there will be no reason not too assemble most of them there. The success of the tiny Encore was at least partly the trigger for this. The sales have far exceeded expectations and few have any clue or care that it’s made in Korea. I see current and future Buick customers as those who have very little care for where the vehicle is assembled. GM will make a bundle on these, would’nt be surprised if one or more future Caddy’s come from China also.
Cadillac is the quintessential crown jewel of the U.S. automakers. Pride of the Big Three. If you think there ‘s going to be consumer backlash over this Buick Envision, there’s going to be an all-out revolt over any Cadillacs from China. Remember how embarrassing U.S. flags made in China were? A Cadillac made in China for Americans will be MUCH worse.
“Remember how embarrassing U.S. flags made in China were? A Cadillac made in China for Americans will be MUCH worse.”
Yet the BMW’s made in South Carolina doesn’t make Europeans cringe in embarrassment?
It’s a pity that they’re doing this but if it’s cheaper that way then I can’t blame GM for thinking about their bottom line. Maybe if the US government provided better incentive to keep manufacturing jobs at home this wouldn’t have happened. Anyhow, it’s not my place to criticize GM’s business decisions or the US government.
You can bet you will not be getting a china made discount on the ride. After all, they are selling this under a premium brand, so you will be paying market price for the china made vehicle.
And? Is that any worse than a vehicle made in another country?
Yes, this is China!
GOD BLESS AMERICA !
Regardless of where it’s built, it’s going to sell well. To many people don’t like how small the Encore is, how boxy the Terrain is or how expensive the SRX (XT5) is. The Envision is beautiful inside and out and if priced right will be a home run for GM.
Our country gave GM billions for support during the bankruptcy and millions more for plant improvements and job security. The reward is jobs lost over the years and closure of Camaro , now made in the USA . For 2017 , I forecast that the Equinox will meet the same fate as the Camaro . WE have over 7 % unemployment now and excess car manufacturing capacity .
So now we look forward to a Chinese brutal communist country whose many coal fired electrical generating systems are producing the world’s worst source of greenhouse gases and a smog so bad that can be difficult for one to breath or see where you are going ! A country where manufacturers like GM become partners with existing companies , which means they won’t be sued by workers for not having proper safety gear or WCB payments . Where wages are dirt cheap and the billions of Chinese there mean there is a huge number of ready made replacements , replacements without human rights !
Yet there are many who care less about conditions , rights , the fact that many jobs in industry in North America are disappearing….. much due , I think , to the total apathy of many of us who have really just become the ultimate consumers . The world is bringing it’s goods to our doors , who cares where they come from , the main thing is the deal , getting the best price . Whether it is automobiles , houshold needs , or illegal drugs which brings ISIS and the Taliban so much of the money they use to make war on the USA and the western world .
There is a big price we pay for being the ultimate consumer , and it will only get much worse for being an ultimate consumer simply means not caring about other foreign conditions or respect for jobs or others in your communities and the country as a whole . Perhaps this one reason people to keep buying guns for the home and carrying on their person ,,,,, got to protect our money , lives , possessions , vehicles …nobody is going to take what is ours ….and the bloodshed just keeps getting worse and worse . Only look at Mexico where thousands are slaughtered yearly with American made guns all of it at the hands of cartels vying for the drug trade and profits from sales to American suppliers to American addicts .
What a sweetheart of a world we have made for ourselves !!
You can make a villain of the Chinese, Conservatives, Legal Gun owners and Corporations but they are not the problem here.
You really think that the legal gun owners are the problem? You had better take a closer look at any big city. Chicago is a prime eample as the deaths are not protection related or even legal gun owner related.
You can make a villan of China all you like but they have us buy the family jewels here because we got fat and lazy as a society expecting the government to spoon feed us from Cradel to Grave. We used to be a society to what ever it takes and now it is I will give you this much and if you want more you have to give me more.
We have been a society that has not had to do without for over 50 years and now we are willing to crash the whole deal because many are still willing to not go with out.
How many people can’t feed their kids but have an I Phone or big screen TV with a PS4? I have seen for years people driving expensive cars but yet can’t put in a full tank of gas?
Large housed Yes they are all over but look at many of them. They can not pay to put custom curtains up in all the windows and have empty rooms because they can not afford the furnature.
It is sad we do not live with in our means and temper our expectations.
Drug sales? Sure they are high as no one wants to work.
I get more people who get fired from a good job at work because they can not show up everyday starting with 2 weeks of vacation and one week of paid personal time and one week of non paid. That is 4 weeks 3 paid and they they miss so much time they lose their job? That is just lazy and poor stadards.
I see Asians come to this contry all the time with nothing and I mean nothing. They take care of themselves. Get Educated, Work from sun up to sun down and make their way in life here well. How come they can do it but the people born here can not even do it with government assistance?
Then you get people out there wanting to blame terrorisam on the exonomy and global warming? That is just flat dangerous. Time to stop playing the agenda issue and deal with the truths.
I agree with your last line but I can show you a whole different set of reasons we have made this world for our selves and many of them can change if we want them too but I just don’t see it. This all comes down to what we do here as to what happenes to the rest of the world. Is going to be easy and painless no but it will take hard work and sacrifice to get back the advantage we gave away.
One thing people seem to forget is that China holds our National debt which at last report is approaching 18 TRILLION dollars . Therefore our government doesn’t want to @iss-off China . So our trade deal with them is tilted their way . As the saying goes , keep your friends close and your enemies closer !
Part of the problem lies with us because our economy is based so heavily on consumer spending . We live in a throw away society , got a phone that is a year old oh thats no good need the latest and greatest one . Same with autos , the older generation would buy a car and drive it till the wheels fell off . Nowadays people will trade in a car after the warranty expires and then purchase on credit an auto that they probably can’t afford anyway . So they finance it for 7 years just to keep up with the their neighbor .
So now everything we buy with the Made in China label fuels their military build-up , keeps their economy’s GDP running at 7 or 8 percent and can afford to build islands off their coast and tell the rest of the world to stay away ..
And as we watch our middle class get smaller China’s is getting bigger . They have production jobs for the less educated citizens so they can buy Cadillac ATS-L ‘s from the General , or now that the government is starting to notice they ave an ageing population because of the law of having only one child , now you can have 2 ! And as their families grow they are starting to look at building mini-vans which they can sell here in the states going head to head with Chrystler as they are the only domestic automaker still building them . By by UAW auto workers .
Because my city is so heavily dependant on GM, and investing in our auto plants I am going to write a letter to our states newspaper The Lansing State Journal and tell them they need to run an article about what GM is doing .
Sure we buy cars from Mexico and Canada , but they aren’t communist regimes . This Buick or GM decision is bad for PR , but I’m afraid with everything else going on in the world today this whole thing will go under the radar . And in time this will end up being business as usual . More goods coming from the Asia-Pacific rim .
Maybe you should ask why the Obama regime is asking American companies such as GM to open up in brutal Communist regimes that have Human Rights problems such as Cuba, America’s new vacation destination! Oh my mistake, as part of our capitulation to Cuba we removed those statements from the State Department travel advisory. This does not fix the job problem of course. I just love reading the racist rants and double standards that people like you like to use.
Well, lets look at it this way…

Made in China…..
We’re not doing that bad considering.
That’s only 3.44%. Still….
EVERYONE FREAK OUT!!! IT’S NOT WAR OR DISEASE THAT WILL DESTROY AMERICA! IT’LL BE A BUICK SUV!!!
Might want to check that list.
“According to Reuters, the next-generation Enclave crossover and LaCrosse sedan will be the only two Buick models still made in the U.S. after 2016. Regal, Verano, Encore to shift production to China when Envision import starts.”
Not sure how the rest of the models pan out, but I’d imagine a fair amount of manufacturing is headed off-shore.
You tend to only tell part of the story.
First off Buick has not announced anything from China but the first year production of the SUV. The rest is pure speculation.
Second you leave out the models you have no clue that are coming that could be built here or even Europe.
Third why have you not complained about the Convertible coming from Poland?
As stated Buick is joined with Holden, Buick of China and Opel. Product for all brands will be produced globally. GM is not going to build them here to send to China as long as they manipulate the currency. But GM can export models to Europe and other markets like Australia that are built here.
Before you get all uppity you need to taken in what all is going on. It is not any different than what Toyota, Honda and most other global makers are doing that sell the same product around the world.
I saw the same article in Auto Week, for whatever it’s worth…
Note your last words they are true.
“for whatever it’s worth…”
I went back and revisited the article.
That was just a cut & paste of an AutoWeek article, citing a news story from Reuters.
Is it true? Is it false because GM hasn’t announced it? Is it only ‘part of the story’ because Reuters reported it and GM hasn’t confirmed or denied?
All I know is what I read in AutoWeek –
Buick appears to be moving assembly of 66% of their output to China. GM was pretty waffle-y about Envision, until that turned out to be a Chinese product they’d committed to.
I have no reason to doubt the Reuters report, given that GM hasn’t confirmed or denied it.
What flavor of kool-aid are you drinking, junior? Buick’s sales aren’t stellar. And their one success (Encore), is moving from SK to China. And China takes 51% of the profits. Unless you have news you’re not sharing with us.
Please enlighten us!
Well first I never said it was not true or false. I stated GM has not announced it and until they do anything can happen. I have read a lot of stories over the years from very reliable publications that never came true.
I have been an Autoweek subscriber for over 30 years and have seen my share of speculation that came true but also more often not become true.
Lets let GM announce what their plans are before we condemn them.
Second we are not even sure yet if the Envision is going to be built there more than a year or so. Speculation also has it moving to Canada at some point too. GM has stated 35K units the first year and that is not much in a segment where GMC/Chevy sells 300,000 units. That is a bit odd for someone to build.
There is always reason to doubt Reuters until GM has made a public announcement.
Buick sales to be honest have been pretty stellar for a company that has not really had much all new product in years. In fact it is amazing they are still around considering at one time not long ago they only had 3 models in the show room. Few brands could comeback from theat.
The Enclave is old, The Lacrosse has roots that reach pre bail out. The Regal is a rehash of an older Opel. The Encore is a rehash of an existing Opel. Now look at the sales and you will find they have done well with what on paper should never have done this well. In fact they have made slow but solid gains in sales and image.
As for China they own 51% of all auto MFG that do business and MFG in China. But if you also note it is the fastest growing consumer market in the world and it is also the largest consumer market in the world bar none. Every MFG is there to make money and expand volume as if they do not go there odds are they will pay the price later for not being there. This has hurt the Japan companies as they hold little favor there over the Euro and GM brands.
Even at 49% GM is making a killing profit wise there. This is a deal with the devil as most automakers are reluctant to get involved with China but most can not afford to not get involved. Companies like Ford that are struggling there are worried if they do not get a foot hold they will be in trouble. FCA as a whole needs more volume and the delays with Alfa there could finish them off as they will miss the volumes they need by 2018.
You need to take all the facts here and understand what is going on not just what is on the surface.
Look into the well and you see a smooth Surface. Look at the entire well under the surface and many more things come into focus grass hopper.
By the way I like my Kool Aide in Grape.
Ok, my friend.
I take news reports with a grain of salt, as well. But they were right about Envision, so I give them some cred.
Anyway, we’ll see how it turns out. The (new) Colorado was first built in Thailand, and now it’s on-shore, so anything can happen.
PS – be careful of that ‘purple drank’:
mix it up with some codeine cough syrup and you’ll end up in the hospital like L’il Wayne.
