And Now, The Preliminary Specifications Of The 2016 Buick Envision

Having finally confirmed the Envision for the North American market less than an hour ago, Buick also released preliminary specifications of the crossover. Though we already had some specs of the Envision sold in China, this is the first time that we have seen them for the new North American-market model.

The 2016 Buick Envision specs tell us a few notable things:

  • The Envision will be offered exclusively with the 2.0L Turbo I4 LTG engine making an estimate 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque.
  • It rides on GM’s global D2XX platform (according to us, not the specs), so the engine is transversely-mounted, and sends power to the front wheels as standard; a fancy, active twin clutch all-wheel drive system will be available.
  • Though marketed in China as a midsize crossover, the Envision’s 183.7-inch length places it squarely in the compact space, being slightly shorter than the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. If you weren’t sure of it before, you should be now.
  • The Envision will have front-drive-based compact luxury crossovers directly in its crosshairs: Acura RDX, Audi Q5, Lincoln MKC, Lexus NX, Volvo XC60.
  • The Envision makes the first time that a crossover will have the HiPer Strut front suspension.
  • The specs list 19-inch aluminum wheels as the only wheel choice, though it’s possible that smaller wheels will be offered on more basic trim levels.
  • Yes, it will be built in and imported from China; Yantai, to be exact.

  1. Isn’t 4047 lbs a bit heavy?

    Reply
    1. It depends on the trim. If it’s the AWD model, then no — it’s ok. If it’s the base FWD model, then yes… a bit heavy.

      1. Because based on the Equinox V6 is about the same weight no?

  2. First made in China vehicle, brought to you by GM. Might stick with a Toyota made in USA.

    1. And the profits from said purchase go to… Japan. At least profits from the Envision find their way to the states.

PS: what Toyota is it that you are buying that’s in this segment AND that’s made in the USA?

      1. No they do not! What will happen though is Americans will lose about 2700 jobs by not producing this vehicle in the US. The floodgates are open now, and Americans just don’t give a damn about American jobs. Just wait a few years until the millions of “China made” vehicles start pouring in, most “not ” made by GM, but rather SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation), which, by the way, also owns Volvo.

We have now given China permission to import and sell their cars here in America and undercut the prices of American cars sold here. It is the beginning of the end of the American auto industry. It will result in yet more Americans on welfare , unemployment and depending on social programs rather than earning a living and paying Federal, and State taxes, paing into Medicare and Soc. Sec. all programs they are going to depend on in the future. There is no logical reason why this vehicle could not be manufactured here in the USA, god knows GM has enough shuttered facilities, and plenty of Americans needing jobs.

Even the stockholders and the Unions couldn’t prevent it. Way to go GM. I don’t know who is going to bail you out the next time but it won’t be me. I know the Chinese are dying to acquire GM.

Just read a horrible story about the Golden Dragon Copper manufacturing facility in Alabama. America never learns from it’s mistakes.

        1. Chinese gov’t owns 51% of the operation.

I would expect that would mean GM (US) is in line to receive 49% of the proceeds.

        2. How will Americans lose jobs from the production of a vehicle that does not yet exist? What you mean is that by producing it in China, no new jobs will be produced in America. Two very different things.

    2. Then you must not consider all of Lexus, all of Scion, Prius, Yaris, Rav4, last generation Corolla, and probably plenty of others.

  3. Just what America has been waiting for…a Buick made in China. You really have to wonder, what were they thinking.

  4. Too bad that its built in a communist country because its a good looking SUV .
I was in a meeting once with the factories management and it was to notify the shop foreman’s and union that there was going to be a reduction in the workforce and instead of saying how many ” people “were going to be laid off he reffered to them as how many ” social security numbers ” that they needed to put out ! !
GM doesn’t give a tinkers D@MN about the people that make money for the corporation . It’s all about PROFIT .
That’s why the Envision won’t be built here . And I do not believe that the UAW was not aware that this was going to take place . But they are dumb enough not to realize that the fewer GM workers there are the fewer union rep’s are needed .
And what most of the intelligent posts have already said is true , China will flood America with their automobiles while we watch our auto industry shrink even more . So while they commit cyber war fare on us everyday to steal our industries secrets and steal our online information , they will soon own this industry as they do almost every product made anymore . What is sad is that there isn’t a D@MN thing we can do about it .
I am just an AMERICAN citizen afraid of what our kids future will look like .

  5. I think we’ll have to see how the quality goes at China. I mean we do know the quality in China is ho hum but again we failed to realize that it’s only assembled in China but where the parts coming from? I honestly feel bad for us Americans but honestly we just have too much whiners at a job. Just my 2 cents

  6. This is the next generation GM Theta platform for small CUVs. The next generation Theta will not be ready for N.A. for another 2 years. The Envision is the next generation Theta; so GM could do a junky Equinox rebadge or a competitive import from China. It would make no sense for GM to build or reequip an assembly plant in N.A. at the height of the car market. Since this is imported from China, GM can maximize capacity in both markets and return more earnings back to their shareholders.

If this vehicle does decently, I expect the next generation to be built in Spring Hill or Oshawa, along side of the Equinox and Terrain.

  7. At Buick media office they have flipped the inches and millimeters here:

    Front track (in / mm): 1575 / 62
    Rear track (in / mm): 1575 / 62

    It should be
    Front track (in / mm): 62 / 1575
    Rear track (in / mm): 62 / 1575

  8. The 2017 Buick Envision has an overall length of 183.7 inches makes it over 15 inches longer than the Buick Encore at 168.4 inches and 18.2 inches shorter than the 2016 Buick Enclave; while the 4,047 lbs appear to make the Envision a bit overweight especially as the Encore is just 3,300 lbs, the Envision is still 875 lbs lighter than the full size Enclave.

Given these dimensions, it’s easy to think Buick could come out with 2 more CUVs one that fits in between the Envision and Enclave at 193 inches in length and possibly weighing about 4,450 lbs and a second CUV that fits between the Envision and Encore with an overall length of 175 inches and a curb weight of 3,700 lbs.

    1. I’m sure the German public said the exact same thing when BMW and Mercedes opened up plants in the US and exported the cars back home.
