2016 Chevy Camaro SS Clobbers Ford Mustang GT In Latest Comparison Test

“With lower weight, higher power, more gears, and greater grip, the Camaro walked all over the Mustang in our performance testing.”

That’s a brief excerpt from the latest comparison test involving the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS and the 2016 Ford Mustang GT from Car and Driver. And, it really sums up the overall tone of the comparison.

While the 2016 Camaro was pegged for its downright dumb ergonomics (why is the cellphone charging station in the rear?) the performance really took home the win here.

Extra power, a more tout chassis and overall greater precision help make the 2016 Camaro look like an all-star compared to the 2016 Mustang. The latest ranking follows quite a few accolades for the Camaro, too. Motor Trend named it a victor over the same 2016 Mustang, and the sixth-generation muscle coupe took home the coveted MT Car of the Year award.

One thing rings true through it all, though. The 2016 Camaro is not just a pony car anymore. It’s a sports car that happens to play on the long-standing heritage of stonkin’ V8s and straight line performance. This one just happens to corner and handle really well, too.

  1. Muscle car? Camaro & Mustang are Pony cars. There is a difference.
Perhaps the 5th gen Camaro could be a Muscle car since it was so huge.
And ofcourse the current Dodge Challenger could be a muscle car with it’s girth.

Camaro generations 1-4 along with the new 6th are clearly Pony cars!

    1. In the Car & Driver review the writer mentions that there is no need to bother comparing the Dodge Challenger based on it’s size…being 9 inches longer and 400 lbs. heavier.

    2. The truth is the Muscle car is dead, The Pony car died years ago. The truth is the Mustang and Camaro have evolved beyond what they originally were.

In the beginning they were a rebodied Falcon and Chevy II built to make a cheap small economy car. Today the Mustang has it’s own platform and the Camaro is sharing with Cadillac now. Both have become GT coupes or if you like in the new Camaro some liken it to a 4 seat sports car now.

The evolution has taken place here and has left the names Pony car and Muscle car to the past history of cheap fast performance.

The Challenger at this point is just out of the picture to compete. It will cater to it’s fan base but to go up against either of these cars would be embarrassing even with a Hellcat under the hood in anything but a drag race.
Sergio needs to invest in Dodge more than Alfa.

  2. I grow very tired of Car and Drivers back handed complements and instance on over exaggerating and never ending references to cars of the past to try and add some sort of witty comedic appeal.

  4. The Camaro SS’s advantage is because of it’s 6.2L V8 engine as the new Mustang GT isn’t bad; but the 6.2L V8 simply offers a flatter torque curve as this is why the Camaro SS is better than the vaunted Cadillac AST-V also.

    1. The less weight and better platform have much more to do with the car being better. The Camaro was wanting for power.

If you speak to any one who has reviewed the car or driven it they will tell you the chassis is one of the best in the world not just in class.

  5. As for the ATSV it is a different car and you can not compare the two. They target two different kinds of buyers.

  6. This is definitely my favorite line:
“Its unapologetically lumpy idle and gruff exhaust note are precisely why you didn’t spend your $45,000 on a BMW M235i.”

  7. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll admit that the Camaro wins straight out, but I wouldn’t call a 2 point win a “clobber”. It was a victory, yes, but it still has faults that trail over from the previous generation, for instance the bloody visibility. I was in one of those, and the rear window is so slow, that all I saw was a reflection of the speakers in the back from the rear view mirror. This is a perfect way to sum up these two cars. For living with on a daily basis and just going to the shops, the Mustang is your better option. For going to the track and setting a blistering lap time, the Camaro is the better option.
