With Jeff Gordon set to retire from full-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing at the end of 2015, much of this year has been spent looking back at the four-time champion’s accomplishments.
Throughout his career Gordon proved strong on restrictor plate tracks like Indianapolis, but he was able to really shine when the series descended upon a road course. As the video above from NASCAR tells it, Gordon was unmatched on the road course for a while, taking an unprecedented six consecutive road course wins from 1997 to 2000.
Gordon’s immense success on the road course prompted other drivers in the series to begin to treat the races less like throwaways and take them more seriously. Some drivers practiced extra hard to hone their road course skills, but Gordon didn’t need extra practice – he was a natural at both Sonoma and Watkins Glen.
