If you watched Formula 1 or American open-wheel racing in the 80s and 90s, the name of Action Express’ newest potential driver should ring a few bells. The WeatherTech United Sportscar Championship team recently invited Eddie Cheever III, son of Eddie Cheever Jr., out to VIR to test their Chevrolet Corvette DP and said the 22-year old “did a fine job,” behind the wheel of the prototype, team boss Gary Nelson said.
Cheever III joined the Action Express crew and seasoned driver Dane Cameron at Virginia International Raceway on Wednesday, October 26th for a pre-season test. The young 22-year old spent this past year driving in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series for Toyota and racked up 1 win and three podiums in the process, landing him in third position in the championship. Prior to racing NASCAR, the Italian-American raced Formula Renault and Formula Three and also tested a Ferrari F1 car.
Action Express is expected to remain with its current driver lineup for the 2016 season, which consists of Cameron, Christian Fittipaldi, Eric Curran, Joao Barbosa and occasional third drivers Sebastien Bourdais and Max Papis. It’s unclear if Cheever III is being seriously considered for a drive with the team, but with a test already under his belt, he could be apart of its roster in not-so-distant the future.
