Those following our coverage of the all-new, 2017 Cadillac XT5, you will already know that the vehicle introduces an all-new structure and platform. The new architecture will allow the crossover to shed a considerable amount of weight, thereby improving fuel economy and various handling characteristics. But just how much weight does the XT5 shed?
Compared to the outgoing, second-generation Cadillac SRX in front-wheel drive form, the 2017 Cadillac XT5 is estimated to be 278 pounds (126 kg) lighter. The weight savings are not as significant with the all-wheel drive model, which will be 165 pounds (75 kg) lighter than a comparable second-gen SRX with AWD due to the heft of the additional drivetrain componentry.
Model: | 2017 Cadillac XT5 | 2016 Cadillac SRX | + / – XT5 |
---|---|---|---|
Est. curb weight (FWD) (lb / kg): | 3999 / 1814 | 4277 / 1940 | -278 / -126 |
Est. curb weight (AWD) (lb / kg): | 4277 / 1940 | 4442 / 2015 | -165 / -75 |
In addition, the new Cadillac crossover is lighter than several competitors. For instance, the XT5 is:
- 100 pounds (45 kg) lighter than the Audi Q5, despite the Cadillac being seven inches longer
- Over 650 pounds (295 kg) lighter than the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, which is roughly the same size as the XT5
Even so, triple-digit savings in weight are nothing to sneeze at, especially given that the XT5 is the same (mid) size as the SRX but with a longer wheelbase and more interior space. Nothing to sneeze at, at all, in fact.

Fun fact, it is 150 lbs lighter than the first gen SRX.
Which proves even more that the second gen is a pig.
Yes..the 2nd gen is a little piggy but also has significantly better crash worthiness and better safety tech than the 1st gen.
That it does, though the better safety performance of the second-gen SRX is the result of progression with the times, more so than better engineering… don’t you think?
Yes the engineering necessary to make the SRX safer had gotten better between generations that is part of the reason it got significantly heavier.
Why isn’t GM getting more press for this? Ats, Cts, Ct6, camaro now this. I hear this talked about on sites like these but not from the normal mainstream news media!
Because mainstream news media, unfortunately, doesn’t pay attention to details any more.
