2016 Holden Commodore Series II Bestowed With A Best Family Car Award

Despite the world going crossover crazy, the Aussies still love their large sedans and, specifically, their wagons. That’s apparent with the latest award the 2016 Holden Commodore Series II has taken home.

Essential Baby has conducted its yearly roundup of family vehicles, and the 2016 Commodore Series II took first place in this year’s competition. The 2016 Commodore Series II Sportwagon earned extra honors for its additional cargo space and utility.

Buyers commended Holden for the large boot, abundant safety features and the space of an SUV in a much smaller package. Consumers also noted the ability to fit three car seats in the rear should the need arise.

Plus, there’s plenty of power under the bonnet should the kids need to get to rugby practice in a rush, considering the 2016 Commodore Series II now comes with standard 6.2-liter LS3 V8 power.

  1. And yet they are all slated for the history books. Makes you scratch your head.

  2. i think if they would have had a few more trim levels, this car would have sold more units. not everyone wants a monster 6.2l V8 with the price tag of $47,000. i would’ve preferred a 5.3l V8 myself but, a 3.6l base trim would have been nice at around $30-$35,000 price tag. Also adding Displacement on Demand or make the engine as fuel efficient as the corvette would have been nice as well to not only prevent the gas guzzlers tax but, to save gas making the car more desirable as a daily driver

    1. We have a 3 litre base model (AU$40k), with a 3.6 litre mid-range and now the LS3 replacing the LS2 in the SS. We also have the Caprice range which is still pretty much the same as it has been since about 2007.

  3. It kind of amuses me that these still get called family cars. When I think of family car these days I think of a mid sized CUV. Here you have a world class RWD vehicle range with near 50/50 weight distribution, powerful V6 or V8 motors, available with a manual on some models, several tiers of high performance models and a base fleet model that although is becoming a rarity would give any other car in a typical corporate fleet an absolute spanking on tight twisty country roads.

To me the Commodore and its variants have evolved into a range of big comfy GTs. That’s most definitely what my SS feels like when I take it on a nice long country trip. 😉

  4. The VF2 Commodore is by far the best car ever produced in Australia. I’m not sure the article makes it clear, but only the Commodore SS and its variants come standard with the LS3.

The base model comes with a 3.0 Liter V6, and there are sports models with the 3.6 Liter V6.

The states really needed the HSV variants for the Holden to sell well.

Even though the Chevy SS is an amazing car, not everyone wants “understated” looks when shopping for a muscle/performance car.

Imagine the HSV Clubsport or the GTS with LSA power, and the body and suspension additions that come with the HSV’s. Huge 6 piston brakes, lowered ride height, 20″ staggered wheels and tires. That is a car that has market penetration potential.

Even the understated body kit on HSV’s Senator is much better than what the SS comes with.
