General Motors U.S. Sales Up 12.5 Percent To 251,310 Units In September 2015

ChevroletBuickGMC and Cadillac dealers in the United States delivered 251,310 new vehicles in September 2015, a 12.5 percent increase compared to September 2014. Sales of all four brands were up on a year-over-year basis, representing the sixth consecutive jump in retail market share.

“Staying focused on core values like initial quality, sales and service satisfaction, cost of ownership, dependability and advanced technology is paying off in higher sales and share, stronger transaction prices and lower incentives,” said Kurt McNeil, GM’s U.S. vice president of Sales Operations. “Unlike our competitors, we did not need to rely on higher incentives to grow our business.”

September 2015 highlights (vs. September 2014, except as noted):

  • General Motors:
    • Sales types:
      • Retail deliveries were up 17 percent
      • Fleet and Commercial:
        • GM continues to execute its plan to reduce sales to rental customers, with deliveries down approximately 3,600 units. Deliveries to state and local government agencies were up 9 percent.
        • Commercial deliveries increased 10 percent for the 23rd consecutive monthly increase
        • Calendar year to date, total fleet deliveries are down 5 percent due to a 12 percent decline in rental deliveries; this is consistent with GM’s plan to decrease the less-profitable sales to fleets and rental firms:
          • Commercial deliveries are up 15 percent
          • Government sales are up 4 percent
          • Rental deliveries are down 14 percent
        • Fleet sales made up 18.9 percent of September 2015 sales, down 3.3 percent year-over-year. Year-to-date, fleet sales make up 22.8 percent of sales, down 2.2 percent
    • Average Transaction Prices (ATPs):
      • GM’s ATPs were up almost $800 per unit compared to August 2015 according to J.D. Power PIN estimates, and about $380 compared to September 2014
      • GM’s incentive spending was 11.2 percent of ATP, equal to industry average
      • Incentive spending was down 1 percentage point from August 2015, a huge contrast to the industry’s 0.2 percentage point decline. Year-over-year spending was down 0.7 percentage points, while industry spending increased 0.9 percentage points
      • Calendar year to date, GM’s incentive spending was 11.2 percent of ATP, up 0.4 percentage points, equal to the industry change
      • At the end of September 2015, inventory was 675,238 units at a 67 days supply (selling day adjusted). That compared to 655,776 units and 63 days supply (selling day adjusted) for August 2015 month-end
      • Industry sales of light vehicles are estimated at 18.3 million, with industry sales of calendar year 2015 estimated to be 17.0-17.5 million units
    • Full-size pickup truck highlights:
      • GM’s estimated share of the retail market for full-size pickups is 39.2 percent, up 0.4 of a percentage point month-over-month (August 2015 to September 2015) and almost 3 percentage points higher than the next closest competitor
      • ATPs increased more than $800 per unit month over month and almost $3,200 year-over-year
      • Average incentives were down $400 per unit month over month and almost $800 year-over-year
      • Commercial deliveries have increased for 17 consecutive months
      • On a retail basis, Chevrolet and GMC pickups were up 24 percent in September and they are up 30 percent calendar year to date
      • To keep momentum building, Chevrolet will launch a freshened 2016 Chevrolet Silverado and 2016 GMC Sierra featuring updated styling, expanded availability of 8-speed transmissions, more advanced safety features, and class-exclusive availability of advanced phone integration technologies (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto).
      • In addition, Chevrolet and GMC will launch the new 2.8-liter Duramax diesel engine in the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado and 2016 GMC Canyon
    • Full-Size SUV highlights:
      • Combined, Chevrolet and GMC have 78 percent of the retail market for full-size SUVs, along with the highest ATPs, according to PIN. September ATPs were up more than $730 compared with August, and they were up more than $2,800 from a year ago
      • The Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV have a 31 percent share of the retail market for large luxury SUVs
      • The GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, the Sierra and the Canyon have the highest ATPs of any vehicles in their respective segments, according to PIN
      • In less than a year, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon have gone from zero to 40 percent retail market share in their segment. The Colorado has also been the industry’s fastest-selling pickup for eight consecutive months, with a days to turn of 21 in September
  • Chevrolet was up 10.92 percent to 170,675 units overall:
    • Retail sales were up 19.4 percent to 134,263 units, its sixth consecutive month of year-over-year sales and share gains
    • Truck deliveries were up 17 percent for the 18th consecutive month of year-over-year growth:
      • Colorado was up an inconceivable amount to 7,334 units overall
      • Silverado was up 7.07 percent to 53,725 units overall
    • Crossover deliveries were up 49 percent for the 10th consecutive month of year-over-year growth:
      • Trax accounted for 6,140 sales overall
      • Equinox was up 24.74 percent to 21,537 units overall for its best September sales ever; Traverse deliveries were up 42 percent for the crossover’s best September ever
      • Traverse was up 13.25 percent 8,857 units overall for its best September sales ever; Traverse deliveries were up 15 percent
    • Camaro was up 2.64 percent to 5,246 units overall; retail deliveries were up 25 percent
    • Corvette was up 4.26 percent to 2,572 units overall
    • Express was up 8.53 percent to 6,666 units overall
    • Impala was up 1.45 percent to 9,359 units overall; Impala retail deliveries were up 15 percent
    • Malibu was up 12,38 percent to 17,066 units overall; Malibu retail deliveries were up 38 percent for the car’s best September performance in 10 years
    • Spark was up 16.97 percent to 2,371 units overall; Spark retail deliveries were up 24 percent
    • SS was up 100 percent to 222 units overall
    • Tahoe was up 7.52 percent to 6,119 units overall but the Suburban was down 14.14 percent to 3,521 units overall; Tahoe retail deliveries were up 9 percent and Suburban retail deliveries were up 8 percent
    • City Express accounted for 1,024 sales overall
    • All other Chevrolet models posted year-over-year decreases in sales
  • Cadillac was up 7.8 percent to 14,908 units overall:
    • Retail sales were down 1.6 percent to 12,519 units
    • ATS was up 2.50 percent to 2,295 units
    • SRX was up a whopping 85.11 percent to 6,849 units
    • All other Cadillac models posted year-over-year decreases in sales
    • The brand continues its transformation in both product and the way it sells it
  • Buick was up 5.01 percent to 18,341 units overall:
    • Retail sales were up 9.9 percent to 16,122 units
    • Enclave was up 0.40 percent to 4,732 units, its best September since 2011
    • Encore was up 46.15 percent to 5,624 units for the subcompact crossover’s 21st consecutive year-over-year increase; Encore retail deliveries were up 46 percent
    • LaCrosse was up 7 percent to 3,880 units
    • Regal was up 26.5 percent to 1,728 units; Regal retail deliveries were up 63 percent
    • Verano was down 29.25 percent to 2,377 units
  • GMC was up 23.82 percent to 47,386 units overall for its best September since 2004:
    • Retail sales were up 20.5 percent to 40,991 units, marking the 20th consecutive month of growing retail sales
    • Acadia was up 3.99 percent to 6,647 units, for its best September sales ever in both retail and fleet
    • Canyon was up a significant percentage to 2,332 units
    • Sierra was up 17.84 percent to 19,754 units; Sierra retail deliveries were up 16 percent
    • Terrain was up 31.59 percent to 19,935 units; Terrain retail deliveries were up 22 percent
    • Yukon was up 22.85 units to 3,963 units and Yukon XL was up 39.82 percent to 3,027 units; Yukon XL retail deliveries were up 17 percent
    • Savana was down 48.07 percent to 728 units
