Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly To Add Second Shift, 1,200 New Jobs

General Motors announced it is expecting high demand for the products produced at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant and, subsequently, needs to meet that demand with a new set of workers. The automaker announced it is adding a second shift at the Detroit-Hamtramck facility, which will total in 1,200 new jobs.

Currently, the facility assembles the Chevrolet Volt, Malibu, Impala and Cadillac ELR on one assembly line, but the forthcoming 2016 Cadillac CT6 has GM doubling down on Detroit.

“This is the result of the award-winning vehicles Detroit-Hamtramck produces and the confidence GM has in our team to build world-class quality for our customers,” said Plant Manager Gary West.

Hiring has already commenced for the second shift, and operations for the next round of new hires at the 4.1-million square-foot facility will begin in early 2016.

  1. So GM is getting rid of a shift in Oshawa — which builds the 352 Impala too — and paying hourly retirment bonuses to hourly employees — but hiring more employees in Detroit? Wouldn’t consolidating 352 assembly in Oshawa make the most sense as a first step? It’s a low volume product and consolidation should reduce costs, free up assembly room in Hamtramck and maybe reduce cash outflows for retiring employees?
