Chevrolet ‘Time Capsule’ Spot Pokes Fun At Toyota Prius: Ad Break

A fourth-generation of Toyota’s Prius plug-in hybrid is on its way, but for now, the once ahead of its time eco car is seen as being less advanced than offerings like the Ford C-Max or the 2016 Chevrolet Volt. The marketing people at Chevy aren’t letting Toyota off the hook for it, either, poking fun at the Prius’ battery technology in their new ad, ‘Time Capsule’.
The ad claims to feature “real people, not actors” being presented new technologies. We say new, but it’s actually things like portable disc players, a computer with dial up internet and a fax machine. All that technology might have been cool in 1999, but in the year 2015, it’s old news.
The joke is that the Prius’ electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack are 15 years old, just like a flip cell phone with a retractable plastic antenna. The 2016 Volt, meanwhile, is more akin to a modern day tablet with newer battery and motor tech and Apple CarPlay.

the future is now…ah ah ah vary funny
GM is toying with facts seeing as Toyota has consistently upgraded Prius.
Volt and Prius are very different products with each having unique stand out features.
Still an excellent ad. No one thinks of Chevrolet as cutting edge.
Constantly updated? They are STILL not using LI batteries in the Prius Sedan!!!!!!! Everybody thinks Toyota is for Grandma’s.
Prius’ NiMH batteries are proven. The real competition for the Prius is conventional cars, not the Volt.
Volt is far sexier than the Prius. It’s a hybrid that isn’t embarrassing to be seen in.
“No one thinks of Chevrolet as cutting edge.”
They used to, starting with the ’55 BelAir thru the ’70 1/2 Camaro. Great products, properly marketed, can change perceptions. The 2016 Volt is a good start.
