Chevrolet Launches OnStar In Brazil

General Motors is continuing the global expansion of its OnStar telematics service, having just launched it in Brazil, as expected. At first, OnStar will be exclusive to the freshened Chevrolet Cruze that was recently launched in the country.

The advanced telematics system offers:

  • Emergency services
  • Security
  • Navigation
  • Concierge
  • Connectivity, all at a level never seen in the domestic automotive market

Using OnStar

In Brazil, OnStar works just like elsewhere in the world:

  • A press of the blue OnStar button on the rearview mirror, the driver is connected to a human operator in the OnStar Service Center that offers such services as internet directions downloaded to the vehicle, searches, bookings, and information on traffic conditions (such as flooded or blocked roads).
  • A press of the red “SOS” OnStar button expedites the call to a separate advisor in the emergency services department who can help with mechanical, electrical or medical assistance in case of an emergency.

Cell-Based Communications

Communication between the vehicle and the attendant in the OnStar service center occurs via a cell connection thanks to a built-in connection in the vehicle. The call is transmitted via the vehicle’s hands-free system using the speakers and microphones, minimizing distracted driving. The system works separately yet alongside a vehicle’s Bluetooth system.

Safety & Emergency Services

In addition, OnStar also warns when the car is being stolen or is involved in an accident that results in the deployment of airbags. This is made possible via sensors within the vehicle that detect abnormal situations and alert the OnStar Service Center. Trained professionals then make an analysis of the situation and request, if necessary, the assistance of appropriate authorities.

OnStar App

OnStar also allows users to command vehicle features, such as locking and unlocking doors, via a smartphone application.

The app can also display a notification when the vehicle starts to move, display its current location, and also ask to be notified when the speedometer exceeds the predetermined speed limit, a useful feature when the vehicle is being used or driven by third parties.

Personalized For Brazil

In Brazil, OnStar claims to deliver a more personalized service to meet the unique demands of the local market.

Established Leader In Telematics

OnStar has been around for 19 years in the United States and continues to be a global leader in connected security solutions, mobility services and advanced information technology.
