2016 C7 Corvette Z06 Takes The Win In World’s Greatest Drag Race Five: Video

Motor Trend didn’t have the greatest experience with the 2016 C7 Corvette Z06 during its Best Driver’s Car competition. The 2016 C7 Z06 became plagued with an unknown issue, leaving many of its ponies off the table during its runs at Laguna Seca.
That car was yellow. The car we see here, for World’s Greatest Drag Race Five, is red. And it has arrived ready to fight for a title, any title, after its previous embarrassment.
One thing it has going against it, however, is the seven-speed manual transmission, since its two closest competitors here are employing quick-shifting automatics. But, it also out-powers its two closest competitors, too. Here, it’s about the hook, power and punch a car can deliver. Not as much its handling prowess.
So, we invite you to sit back, relax, and have a look for yourself. Can the 2016 C7 Corvette Z06 make a comeback? You’ll know after 6:22 of your time.

The Bentley GT3-R was the most impressive: at 5000lbs that thing really rockets thanks to the brilliant engineering of their AWD system and transmission! The Benz AMG GTS was also highly impressive, despite being underpowered. Again, the brilliance behind the engineering makes this one of the best RWD cars. Putting the power down better than anything comparable to it. That’s one thing I hope GM learns from the Germans is how to develop a small V8 that can put down massive power well! It’s kinda strange that they have a massive 6.2L V8–also supercharged–that can barely keep up with the smaller V8’s of Germany. Nevertheless it was still a great win for the Z06, given it had a traditional, tried and true manual gearbox compared to the fancy dual clutch of the Benz and auto of the Bentley. 🙂
FYI the Bently uses a transmission based on a GM licesed design.
Huh? I thought the Bentley was using a ZF-sourced 8-speed; what GM licensed are they using?
Also for your info, the GM V8 IS smaller than every engine in this race except for the GTI and Miata…Dimensionally smaller that is.
Why learn to make do with a externally huge, complicated, peaky, small displacement engine that has no real advantage in power delivery or fuel efficiency, when you can have a light, small, internally huge, motor that can crush the competition every time?
Also, While we are on it, When will the Europeans learn to make a small light chassis for their sports cars like the GM. For the last 20+ years nearly everything out of Europe has been 4500lbs or more. ;P
I guess you’re right about the Vette’s engine size in relation to the cars mentioned, yet I still stand by my original assessment of the Europeans still having the superior engineering. For one, despite weighing substantially more, they still manage to deliver power well: just look at this race and how the 503hp GTS stayed right on the hills of the 650hp Vette and 571hp AWD GT3-R. Both these cars also smoked the 640hp CTS-V, which is substantially lighter than the Bentley. While they may not have yet developed a lightweight chassis, these Europeans sure know how to manage the weight!
FAIL FAIL FAIL…. the Z06 is considerably less money than either vehicle and out performs both, so yeah ‘MURICA!!!
Can’t argue with you there; the Vette is perhaps the greatest performance value for the money; at least until it starts to overheats and suffers major power reduction, which those overpriced and overweight European cars won’t have to worry about. XD
No doubt the Vette is a stellar performance for the dollar value, but apparently there are kinks GM needs to iron out! The CTS-V and ATS-V are also said to not handle heat very well, as noted by a couple of reviews recently.
Engine displacement is not the most important thing?
Can explain why Mercedes drinks petrol more than Corvette does, although its engine is smaller?
Johnny Lieberman is wrong when speaks in spanish ha ha
The //Z wins because impressive power and very fast transmision
Regards From Spain, great video
Why did they handicap the Corvette. Who brings a manual transmission to a drag race.
