Guy Buys Fifth-Gen Chevrolet Camaro, Has A Surprise Special Button: Video

Wind back the clock to the turn of the century and the fledgling tuner car scene was about to be thrust into the national spotlight.

In 2001, The Fast and the Furious hit the silver screen and car enthusiasts everywhere scrambled to emulate its outlandish vehicular heroes by adding to their cars all the noisy exhaust tips, over-sized wide body kits and spoilers they could find.

Some even slathered their cars with underglow which, for whatever reason, served to draw attention to the underside of the car with a series of pulsating lights. Because that’s what cool kids did.

Today, we look back on that trend with embarrassment. Because, no one in their right mind still fits underglow to their cars, right? Well, actually…

Here’s proof: The guy in the video below recently picked up a pre-owned fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro SS (possibly a 1LE judging by the wheels), only to find a mysterious switch and controller hidden inside his car. Unfortunately, for the embarrassment of the car community at large, the worst came true.

The embittered owner flicks the switch to reveal a series of illuminations in the hood.

“Kinda cool, I guess, maybe. Some blue lights in the hood,” he says sarcastically as his Camaro strobes behind him.

To our dismay, the worst was yet to come. He then dabs the remote, lighting up the whole underside of the hapless Camaro with a trifecta of pulsating red-blue-green lights. Once he’s choked down the shame he concludes showcasing the undesired modifications with a simple yet effective three-letter summary…

“Yup.”

Yup. Thankfully, he’s still got GM’s 6.2-liter LS3 V8 under the hood.

A far-too-tall Ontarian who likes to focus on the business end of the auto industry, in part because he's too tall to safely swap cogs in a Corvette Stingray.

  1. Everyone knows black wheels and lights under the car add an extra 50-75 Horsepower. Lucky guy.

In all reality, I threw up a little when I saw that.

    1. Nothing wrong with the wheels…they look 1LE or ZL-1 takeoffs.
Also, to each their own with lighting…you paid $30k (new) or more, you can do with it what you want, to a point, and at least it’s controllable. Not my cup of tea, but IMO, that’s better then sticking a useless 3 ft high rear spoiler and tailpipe that doesn’t fit, as well as an after market gaudy grille/body kit as I’ve seen on V6’s….those accessories you can’t hide.

  2. Uggghh, those lights are gross! If I were the owner I’d throw that remote switch in the trash!

  3. I think the lights are pretty cool. I’m thinking about putting blue or black lights under my Grand Cherokee but they won’t pulse.

  4. 20 years from now these lights will tell so much about the era’s zeitgeist… for the time being they are fugly, but no one forces you to switch them on…
