This weekend’s round of TUDOR United Sportscar Championship racing is extremely important in Corvette Racing’s bid for the GTLM championship, but that hasn’t stopped them from taking the time to keep two fallen members of the racing community in their thoughts.
Adorning the side of the No. 3 and No.4 Corvette C7.Rs at Circuit of The Americas this weekend will be tribute stickers honoring IndyCar driver Justin Wilson and former Corvette racing driver Dick Guldstrand. Wilson was killed at Pocono Raceway in August after being struck in the helmet with a piece of debris. His death was felt all through the motorsports world, with drivers in race series around the globe mourning the loss of the father of two, who was often described as a ‘gentle giant’.
Guldstrand was a prominent member of the Corvette community, a Corvette Hall of Fame inductee and was crucial to getting early race programs involving the Corvette up and running. He started out racing his ’56 Corvette in this 1950s, and later won three consecutive SCCA Pacific Coast Championships from 1963-1965 in his C2 Corvette Stingray. He also set up Guldstrand Engineering, which in the 1970s built 70% of all Chevy-powered road racing cars on the West Coast. He was 87 at the time of his passing.
So as you root for Corvette Racing this weekend, remember to keep these two fallen racers in your thoughts, just as the rest of the team will be.
