Based on GM’s Alpha platform, the 2014-present Cadillac CTS represents the third generation of the CTS nameplate. For the third gen, the CTS is available exclusively as a mid-size four-door sedan (at least for now). The sport-luxury sedan is getting a series of notable updates for the 2016 model year, including the ultra high-performance 2016 Cadillac CTS-V and the new inclusion of GM’s all-new 3.6L V6 LGX engine.

As the CTS fell 33 percent, overall sales of Cadillac vehicles in the U.S. — which include those of the CTS — dropped 5.48 percent to 15,738 units in August. See the complete GM August 2015 sales results.

Market has spoken–not worth the price!
I agree…the new CTS is a GREAT car. I have a 2014 CTS 3.6 AWD Luxury Sedan and I love it, but I don’t think its worth $11,000 more than my 2011 CTS 3.6 Premium Coupe. Its not that the car isn’t worth the price, but they raised the price to fast. Cadillac is finally building a car that competes with German rivals and the cost is the same. They should be taking market share from the completion, instead they’re giving it away.
The way to gain share in any market is to offer more for less, that’s marketing 101. Once you own a significant share of the market you begin to raise prices slowly, marketing 102. And you stop increasing prices when you start to loose share, Market 103.
I just hope the new management team figures this out before its too late.
I would like for GM Authority to dig deeper and report the percentage of conquest sales of the ATS and CTS rather reporting increase or decrease of the cars since it is a repeat from the regular whole make sales report.
We already read the whole Cadillac sales report for August.
I too would like to see GM Authority report the increase of transaction price and if possible the profits made by the cars. GM says Cadillac is profitable very profitable. Lets see the numbers as that is the real number that really matters.
I think we need to get all the numbers on the table here to really measure what is going on. Volume means little in this segment anymore. They are not Chevy or the value leader model.
Note too those who think the price is too high. How do you price a ATS below an Impala and then expect to create an image? Or do you do the smart thing and finish the rebuilding and make the car the best in class at the current pricing?
Fixing Cadillac is not to discount but to continue to improve the cars and that is just what they are doing. Pricing them to Chevy and Buick levels fixes nothing but selling more cars for little profit while messing up the image and your marketing plan.
Work smarter not harder in the Luxury segment.
Also you may want to report volumes in real numbers not percentages. Your 37% is 6,000 cars. This is not like 37% of Camaro numbers here. That would be like 37,000 cars. Percentages are very misleading in the low volume segment.
Exactly, Chevrolet is the volume leader in the GM hierarchy.
Cadillac is continuously making strides in the luxury market. Cadillac is ranking high in performance and quality. Mercedes, Audi & BMW know that Cadillac is now in the conversation with them, when about 10-20 yrs ago they were not.
Making strides? Sales down 37% year over year, you call that making strides?
You can create all the “image” you desire, but really need to focus on how Cadillac is going to pay back “big pockets daddy GM corporate” for the $12B. Trust me this is a business to be run for a profit and return on investment. This is not a socialite circle for the elite! Enough of this crap about they are the most profitable cars in GM–they should be and by a long shot.
Will they be able to return 15-25% return on the $12B to GM shareholders–very unlikely.
What’s the time frame for said return? Let’s keep in mind that Cadillac is a long-term investment with a significant amount of opportunity, more so than what is available at Chevy-Holden or Opel-Vauxhall-Buick. In fact, Cadillac is the only HUGE opportunity GM has to become 10-20 percent more profitable. Few other automakers have similar potentials.
Chris who is to say they are not giving a return today. Even with lower volumes they have been bringing in more money.
Caddys look stale….they need to look like the ELMIRAJ concept…. both coupe and sedan versons….in fact make the CT4/CT5 and other upcoming Caddys look like the CIEL and ELMIRAJ.
You were babbling about the Caddy’s being “stale” in the article yesterday about the ATS.
Rye — I think someone told you this in the ATS sales thread… but your comments are totally not in line with market opinion.
Cadillac needs to bring back the LFW V6 which will be used in a twin-turbo configuration for the upcoming CT6 as it’s obvious that Cadillac consumers do not care that the turbocharged 2.0L 4-cyl engine may offer better mileage and you’ve got to wonder how much better mileage does the 4-cyl offer when the LFW V6 would feature cylinder deactivation to function as either a V4 or 3-cyl engine as one would think Cadillac could get the naturally aspirated 3.0L V6 by mid-year.
Enter the 3.0L TT LGW:

Makes you wonder how many buyers would opt for GM’s L83 EcoTec3 5.3L OHV-2v V8 (from Chevy’s Silverado) that makes 355 horsepower instead of the 3.6L DOHC-4v V6 that makes 335 hp.
Many who were leasing the previous CTS have balked at the new car. Some don’t like the higher pricing, some don’t like a turbo 4, some have moved on to CUV’s. Whatever the case, the CTS has to be seen as a huge disappointment for GM. In August 2012, 5136 units of the CTS were sold. In August 2015, just 4179 units of the ATS and CTS combined were moved and that’s with the ATS at 2449 units the best total of 2015!
But was it at a higher ATP and/or profit? That is the real question.
Look either Cadillac lowers prices and then people are going to complain that Cadillac is too accessible and not exclusive enough, similar to what they in the 70’s when every middle class plumber had a Coupe deVille in their driveway, or you can increase the prices, and then everyone complains that every middle class plumber DOESN’T have a CTS in their driveway. Sure, Cadillac could offer a $199/mo sign and drive lease on the CTS and watch these fly off the lots, but that’s not a real brand building strategy, even through the 60’s Cadillac carefully limited how many cars it built to keep supply tight, everyone shouldn’t have or should be able to afford a Cadillac, that’s the idea.
the current Cadillacs are nice….. but its the wedged body style that gets me….if they dident have the wedged body shape caddys had for years…..they would be great looking cars…..I like the styling…. accept for the wedgey part.
Rye the styling is evolving and changing to a softer look but still distinct Cadillac look. Not everyone hates it. To be honest the BMW styling is the stalest in the industry and they sell more on reputation vs. styling. Only the new Hybrid has really broken some ground.
The show cars you have seen will influence but not replace the present cars as by the time the new cars hit the market those designs will be old. We will see hints with new styling that will advance the brand.
If you compare todays CTS to the first one you can see it has evolved.
the BMW 7 is a great looking cars….it has that straight body….not that wedged shape that Cadillac has…that’s why I think Caddys are nice but DOENT BREAK NEW GROUND….the beltline slants down to the front making the rear look a bit fat…as in my option looking like a bit cheap in a way…as the cheap cars like the Ford Feista and Focas…have that sloped beltline….and as you see the upper class Fords like the Fuson and Turas…the beltline is straighter…why….because cheaper cars have more sloped beltlines…im just using a example….its time for Cadillac to look like Cadillacs ….in the 50s 60s 70s Cadillacs looked like Cadillacs ….not sloping lines that todays caddys have….the current Caddys are not bad looking….I just think that Cadillac need to step forward into a new body shape….and yes your right…the CTS has improved over the last generation…the current CTS looks light years better than the 2008 CTS….so the CTS is now a good looking car.
You keep repeating yourself and posting about the same thing in every news article about the Cadillacs.
Besides price, Cadillac screwed up the size.
Gen 1 + 2 CTS was a perfect size at 190 + 191″.
If you stand next to a 183″ ATS and 195.5″ CTS, your mind tells you ATS is kinda small and
CTS is kinda big.
Base without leather seats and no rear camera is not popular.
I think it gets rear camera in 2016. Even Hondas has a rear camera.
A few items could be left off the Luxury and included at the next level, to get the
Lux 2.0 under 50k. The 2.0 at 300HP would look a lot more impressive.
the Elmiaj and Ceil concepts are gorgous…it would be great if the upcoming Caddys will take disghn cues from the two show cars.
Cadillac’s CTS is possibly the ‘best’ American made sedan made in the past 100 years and it’s something that Cadillac should emphasis in their commercials because nothing from Chrysler or Ford comes anywhere near the CTS.
C7 Corvette sales in August 2015 was over 2700 while the Dodge Viper managed just 40; this is the marketing approach Cadillac needs to adopt as Johan de Nysschen should want to choke out the competition by selling 10-15X as many Cadillac cars as BMW or Mercedes to get their profits though high volume.
