Probably the most startling statistic is the days sales in inventory. On August 1 the figure was 154 days.
How can you get yourself into a position of this type especially when going into the following year with some substantial improvements in the drivetrain? Unconscionable!
To show you how dire it is, you can’t even configure a 2016 ATS (other than the V)on the Cadillac ATS “build your own” site, but dealers in Pgh have the 2016 in stock. Going to be a lot of fun unloading the approximately 9,400 units that were in stock on Aug 1. I haven’t seen Sept 1 inventory figures yet.
I was at the dealership the other day and was surprised to see the price. Awd turbo with sunroof, $46k… No wonder they aren’t selling. It’s nice but not that nice.
The ATS is an expensive car. especially considering the size and interior quality. When I was shopping in 2014, a fully loaded Premium, V6, AWD listed for just over $52,000. That’s what 2011 CTS Coupe, Premium, AWD listed for and it was a MUCH nicer car, inside and out. The ATS is just not a good value, but then again neither was the new CTS Luxury Sedan, V6 AWD that I bought. Cadillac is pricing themselves out of their own markets. I hope they fix this problem before it too late.
I see what you are saying except that the ATS is a nicer car on the outside.
Yes, the ATS is “expensive” compared to… say… a Buick. But compare it to its direct rivals from the German 3 and to the Lexus IS, and it’s actually a good value. That said, value is not the forte of luxury cars… in other words, luxury cars are not purchased for their “value”, since BMW and Benz charge a pretty penny for even the basic luxuries (like 60/40 split-folding rear seats) and Bluetooth Audio streaming.
As for your comparison to the LAST GENERATION CTS… that was then, and this is now. The last-gen CTS is NOT “nicer” in any way compare to the ATS. Not in exterior styling, not in interior quality, not in driving dynamics, not in technology, and not in convenience. The only thing it had going for it was an attractive price because is straddled the compact and midsize luxury segments, thereby not really serving either segment really well and hamstring Cadillac in the process.
It is way too small for the segment it’s competing in. GM made the ATS too small. The C, 3, and A4 all got bigger. Lets not forget the upcoming Jaguar XE and the Alfa Romeo Guillia coming out shortly are both much bigger. All these cars dwarf the ATS. The ATS is now the tweener that the last gen CTS was. Too small for it’s segment and too big vs. the A3 and CLA.
Hey Vt — let’s do some quick comparisons here:
The 2015 Cadillac ATS 2.0T AWD starts at $38,240
The 2015 BMW 328i (2.0T) AWD starts at $40,350
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C300 (2.0T) AWD starts at $40,950
And I should add that the Cadillac has significantly more standard features compared to the BMW.
Clearly, Cadillac is priced well within the segment and price is not the problem.
Chris,
The market has spoken–it does not feel it is price justified.
It is perception issue and lack of marketing. Price has nothing to do with it.
It’s is justified. The only problem is that Cadillac has to undo decades of self-inflicted damage by low=balling their product and their price.
Where Mercedes can command that kind of price and sell in droves, Cadillac must do that same. The bullshit of “can’t out German the Germans” is a defeatist attitude.
You might as well say “Cadillac won’t ever command those prices because their cars are suppose to be lower rent than the Germans”.
Not at all.
I hate to belabor the point but my $55K 2014 ATS super-loaded is a quality disaster! Of the 25 or so GM cars I have owned, it is far and away the most problematic in terms of warranty repairs and recalls. I’m guessing I have sitting on my desk at least #s 8-10 recall notices which means taking the time and expense to take the car to the dealership to fix engineering errors–standard of the world–not. On top of this I have had numerous warranty repairs, the most recent being worn steering component which is causing the car to drive like a dump truck. My 2015 Colorado is currently a much more comfortable vehicle to drive!
I’m not alone on my criticism of the quality of the ATS–go look at CR reliability ratings. I’m not a lone man in the desert!
Until Cadillac starts to sell a quality ATS, sales will suffer, customers will leave permanently, and they can increase the price all they want to supposedly to raise its image. Consistently produce a quality vehicle and they will come!
So sad to read this as mine has been problem free…also a 2014 2.0 AWD.
I have to ask though..8-10 recalls?? Are you sure?? I’ve had one regarding the sunroof switch that I have to deal with.
Overall I love my ATS and it guts me to see them selling so poorly..especially in the USA their home country
Agreed that it’s a bit pricey but maybe the ho-hum styling is to blame as well. Performance cars need to be stunning. GM should be well aware of this fact. One only needs to look at the failure of the bland G8, GTO and now the SS to see that style is a major factor.
This is just an aberration.
There have been multiple stop sales on the ATS due to active recalls. Dealers were forbidden to deliver any ATS for almost the entire month of August due the the recall affecting the power sunroof (approx 80% of nationwide inventory).
There was an additional recall at the beginning of September requiring a software flash before deliveries could begin again.
If dealers can deliver them the ATS should get back in line.
the ATS has a weird and awkard stance…..in my tast I think its a wierd looking car…..Cadillac current disghn them is stale.
The ATS and CTS have nothing weird and awkward about them, they have gorgeous lines, a planted and confiden stance, and a heathy dash to axle ratio thanks to the longitudinal engine placement and RWD setup. Have you even seen one in person for more than 5 seconds?
Let’s just say that you are probably the only person in the world with that opinion. Go drive some Buicks or something.
I agree Silent E, the ATS and CTS have great lines. phenomenal looking cars. and the ATS-V Coupe which unfortunately I have yet to see in person is stellar in the pics! the look is menacing, which is a good thing.
This is no aberration. The only “aberration” is asking customers to pay top prices for a car that loses considerable value upon resale and has not yet established itself as a truly top luxury brand. Cadillac needs to get real with its pricing! It is still an unproven – in terms of luxury, reliability and resale – when compared to the brands that it likes to compare itself with (BMW, Mercedes, etc.) from Europe. Can it get there? I truly believe so. But Cadillac still has to have the patience to re-build the reputation it once enjoyed as a world leading luxury/performance brand. Don’t start counting the dollars yet.
The reason it depreciates so fast is that it is overpriced when new. The President can say whatever he wants about “premium pricing”, but the used car market is “Reality”.
No, the reason it depreciates fast is lack of demand on used models. Just like the lack of (or low) demand for new models.
I disagree , understated style is fine , what GM has been doing and the 2013 Malibu is a good example….the exterior is a middie sized product but the interior is that of a compact , the packaging is terrible ! It is like sitting a plastic bath tub , as far as I’m concerned and while this is one man’s opinion , something is wrong here . When the CEO says this product is going to die in a couple of years , even he probably realizes they are trying to push water uphill !
Jim, the interior is on par with the competition from BMW and Lexus. It is below the all-new C-Class Benz and Audi; the former just came out recently (an all-new product, the latter is… well… Audi). The point is that the product (interior or otherwise) can be improved, but is not the reason behind faltering sales volume. The problem is the brand, the reputation, and the unavailability of (or rather inability to sell) cars due to recalls.
The styling of both cars isn’t to blame for slow sales . There are a couple of reasons , one is the price . People are not going to lay out that kind of dough for a small Cadillac . Another is the lack of advertising when the cars were launched , and through out the model year . The biggest reason in my opinion is what consumers are buying right now…. SUV’s . Gas prices are as low as a year ago and in the short term may keep falling . Cadillac just does not have in their portfolio what the consumer wants . All you have to do is look at the sales of the old SRX to see that this is what Cadillac buyers want from the division . The launch of the XT5 is crucial to the health of Cadillac for the next few years while they go on a ” hiatus ” after the CT6 and XT5 hit the market . It needs to sell like the SRX has been doing . You can’t just sit on the 12Billion dollars to hold you over , there needs to be a high volumn seller to help pay the bills . The average car buyer knows that the new product is going to cost more than the old one , but if they do what they did to the CTS raising the price so much that people were not willing to pay the price its going to be a really bad 3 or 4 years .
Cadillac for years has been trying to re-invent itself to change to what the consumer wants , and this is just another chapter . I’m not a fan of Mr. Johan ‘s plans for Cadillac but their problems to keep up with market demands are deep seated in GM’s culture . There are alot of plans for the resurgance of Cadillacs image but it all boils down to building what the customer wants .
wake up….Cadillacs look almost the same as ten years ago…not so much that the CTS look weird… I think the CTS looks fine….the ATS is the weird one out there….the CT6 and CTS look too much alike…..the CT8 would hopefully look much bolder.
That should not be a problem as the BMW’s look the same as they have for the last 3-4 decades and they are one of Cadillac’s competitors.
Rye. Please shut up. Your opinions are nearly worthless and carry no substance outside of subjective opinions. The Internet will thank me later.
Thanks
I test drove an ATS Coupe 2.0 Turbo and it was great. Since Pontiac is gone I am narrowing my purchase in 2016 between the ATS coupe and the Camaro SS.
I cannot understand why the ATS is kinda struggling a bit for sales in the market but I guess not too many ppl want a compact luxury performance car.
I have a ’14 Camaro and I am looking forward to selling it in ’16. Even though the quality seems good and the car is solid; I cannot stand the large size of it and the wheelbase ( also the A-pillars contribute to it’s blind spots). The large size of it is almost the same reason the Dodge Challenger looks a bit comical.
Good riddance to it in 2016!
You can has all the issues and reasons you want but this is simple.
Cadillac is rebuilding it’s reputation. It think we can all agree on this and only a few are foolish enough to understand it will be done in with one model and in one year.
Second Discounting only adds to the issue of trying to rebuild an image. Not only the lower price sends a wrong signal the fact is it cuts profits as well as undercuts the cars image. If you have to sell it cheap then why buy it as it sends the signal the customer could not afford an expensive car.
Third lets look at the profits. According to GM they are making money with Cadillac and they have stated from the start they are no longer a volume brand. Also Percentages here are small with lower volume numbers. If you only sold 4 cars and you drop 1 you lost 25%. It is not like a percentage of what Chevy or Ford sells.
Finally Cadillac is in that purgatory casam of removing itself from GM and making their own way. There is going to be some lean and painful things that we will see but they correct themselves with time, money and new product. The ATS and CTS are due for a revamp soon and the delay on new product is what this is all about.
So right now wringing your hands and complaining about price and volume means little right now. The focus right now all needs to be on profits. That is what rules this class. Cadillac will never sell as many cars as they did in 1978 but they will make more money then they have sin the 30’s on the adjusted dollar.
Scott too many ppl are trying to play armchair QB, they cannot understand that Cadillac has a plan like the one you mentioned.
Cadillac has already achieved one of their primary goals as the ATS and CTS usually out perform and out handle their competitors in all the major reviews. The Alpha platform is a winner.
I, for one, don’t disagree with the profit motive.
But perhaps you have more information…
So, what is the +/- for 2015, ytd?
And what was the +/- for 2014?
And if they’re not yet profitable, what’s the projected time frame when Cadillac goes from red to black?
Just honest questions – no agenda.
If you know what the numbers are, please share.
Thanks, Scott.
No real inside info just reading reports from market watchers and what info GM has given out.
While some may say it is all the SUV’s that are making them profitable Cadillac and GMC are their two most profitable division. Now even if it is the SUV’s propping them up it buys them time to finish the work of rebuilding and retooling.
From what I have seen and read Cadillac is in the black and has been in the black.
First off you have to consider that Luxury Car Divisions have to be looked at and aynalized differently than a regular mass market division.
In the market Luxury cars account for 10% of the market and make over 50% of the profits. How?
Well it is because to design and engineer a car it cost so little more than just a regular Chevy for the most part. But with that said it can sell for 2-3 times the price. This is why GM is putting more money in and why Ford saved Lincoln. With the marked up priced they give them a lot of meat on the bone even at very low volumes and very little risk.
Now if you do as Chrysler and take the 300 and discount it down to the price of a Malibu sure you may move more cars but make very little profit. Also you will never move the volume you need to make this really much profit.
To improve the image of Cadillac they want to keep volumes lower and prices higher to make sure these cars are in the right hands. You do not want these in every Trailer Park BIngo Hall parking lot or Waffle House Parking lot. This sends a bad message to the people of means you want to pay more for these cars.
Images can not be bought or discounted down. You have to invest, continue to build better product and earn the trust of people who will pay the money.
Like Gino said too may want to play armchair web Quarterback or as I like to say CEO and just assume or treat things all the same. Other than the added content the cost of building a Luxury car is a lower percentage of the cost of the car. Profits are high. Luxury MFG could charge less but they want to make sure they one make money but two protect their image.
Porsche in the 80’s tried to go mass market with the 924-944 and almost got their ass handed to them. They for sure sold a lot more cars but it got to the point that the 911 was not as special anymore as their were Porsches even in High School Parking lots. They tried to make the Porsche name as common as a Camaro. Not a good Idea for the image. They cut back on the cheap cars. When they tried it again they upped the price from Camaro to Corvette range in the Boxster and while they sold less cars they still make as much or more money and they are protecting their image.
I find that many who are upset with price are the people who will no longer be able to afford Cadillac as they are no longer just a few thousand over a Chevy. Hell you have an Impala nearing $46K you can not take a Cadillac much lower. All the new cars are too damn expensive but to price a ATS any cheaper would be foolish.
As of now those who came in charge last year deemed Cadillac good but not good enough. People want a better Cue and they want left side dimming mirrors or some other standard feature well you are not going to get a better car lowering the price. Then to lower the present cars and then jack them back up is not going to go well at all. Now is time to bite the bullet and continue to improve the cars and move forward with the profits in hand they are now making. They are enough to ride this one out and will only improve.
Many make a big deal about Tesla. Well it is not the technology or the big touch screen on the dash that has made them successful. It is the fact they found they could sell an Electric car for $128,000. This makes it easy to do low volume even with a very high tech and expensive to build car to make money. No one though people would buy a car like this but they are. That is also why it is so much more difficult to build and sell one at $30K like GM is trying to do and why Tesla is taking so long to make a go at that market.
I feel for the people who may have to settle for a Buick but the fact is for Cadillac to be more exclusive it much be like the others and not a car just anyone can afford. Benz and BMW are moving down market to a point to increase sales but they are moving carefully. If they make a mistake it could bite them too.
Image and heritage have to be earned over time and careful pricing and making the best car possible. That is what they are attempting to do. Not everything is in place and some things will be painful to watch for a couple years. The delay they announced on any new product will hurt too but it has to happen if you want even better cars. Cadillac is more to the details now as they have some pretty good cars. But to win here they need the best and that is what they are working on now. The old GM culture is out of their planning finally and it will be very interesting to see what happens.
Is this all going to work. I hope but it still could fail if GM pulls a plug or the economy tanks or some other odd thing. But based on the product we have and the willingness of GM to go all in to fix them for the first time in decades the odds are in their favor.
To understand Cadillac and much of what GM is doing you have to go to places outside the auto web sites or go to where the industrial news is not the enthusiast news.
I know some may not like what I have to say but lets face it Cadillac was never really in the conversation with Benz and BMW with the N star engine in a FWD Seville. Today they are beating them on the track and in a short while they will be beating them in the interior and other features offered. There is nothing the others are doing GM can not also do and do better with the right support.
The difference between a 1995 Seville STS and todays CTSV is the support and culture change at GM. While the CTSV today is better it only had about 70% of the new culture in it. The CT5 should see nearly 100% in it.
Even when all is done someone will be complaining about styling, the emblems, price or no bench seat but GM will still be making more money than they ever have on the line.
Scott,
Go and configure a 2016 Impala LTZ full tilt, adaptive cruise the whole nine yards and you are looking $42-$43 not $46!
You still Can not price a Cadillac to nearly the same level as a Chevy.
While you think Cadillac is over priced you are leaving out a whole lot of other factors. You need to include all the facts for a true value here.
Cadillac is a lower volume brand now.
Cadillac is a higher profit vehicle.
Cadillac percentages of sales represent much smaller numbers than a Chevy. 37% is 6K cars not 37K cars as if we were talking Camaro’s.
You need to do this intelligently. Discounting the price of the fixes what? Sure you sell some more units but not make anymore money. In fact you may start cutting into profits. It also prevents you from continuing to improve the car content.
If you want to fix this you continue to improve the cars and continue to recover the reputation. These are going to be a painful 5 years here as we see a delay in upgrades with the new admin at Cadillac calling the shots. They have to live with the hand they were dealt while they get the changes in place that they want. These things do not happen in one year and with one model.
All a discount will do is much like a Sugar High does. It will give you some better looking percentages short term but not really improve the brand or image.
For Gods sake it is already cheaper than the others in segment less Lincoln.
Do you want to fix Cadillac or do you want to go back to the old days and just compete with Lincoln?
Martin you show the wisdom of the old GM culture. They just lived for today and never really had a solid plan for the future. That is what got us in this Fd up mess to start with. GM lowered prices and tried to sell higher volumes. How did that work out for them?
Work smarter not harder in this segment. Also accept it will take time and money to earn bac the trust of the public. If you think that it would fix it’s self by now you really need to learn how the real world works here.
If you think pricing a ATS to the level of a Chevy will work than prove it. My proof is the 1980’s and 1990’s at Cadillac it won’t work. They tried it and cheaper is not better. Now to continue to make better and better cars is how you fix this.
Cadillac’s marketing approach for all of the cars is no different than it was 20 years ago as people recognize by the Cadillac name that the cars represent the top tier in American luxury but what Cadillac needs to do is show images like the Cadillac ATS-V.R competing in the Pirelli Racing Series or the ATS-V being put through it’s paces on Germany’s Nurburgring so that younger millennials recognize that the newest generation of Cadillac cars are designed and built to compete with the world’s best.
As much as I like the ATS, I’m not surprised that it’s doing so poorly in the marketplace and frankly, I would not be surprised to hear the new CTS is selling poorly as well. We all know the SUVs are doing fine. We can speculate all day as to the reason. But frankly, just like with the last batch of Euro wannabe cars, Cadillac is learning the hard way that nobody really wants a “german Cadillac”.
My other issue with GM and what they are doing with Cadillac is the ‘Bottom Up’ rebuilding of the brand. IT DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY. Especially not with luxury cars. You break the mold up top! Then you trickle down the greatness to the rest of the line.
I hope Cadillac hits it’s stride with sales that reflect the glowing reviews. But then again glowing reviews only matter to us enthusiast. Average Joe on the street only cares about perception and style. And frankly the ATS and CTS don’t have either.
I never reflexively turn my head to look at a Caddy unless it’s a previous gen CTS Wagon, or Coupe, or a Escalade. I practically stare down every new Benz or BMW – especially the new BMW 4 series…it’s gorgeous – and the M editions stop you in your tracks; both 2 and 4 door versions. Mercedes is in a new styling renaissance as well, never mind how they OOZE quality.
Cadillac’s cars just aren’t up to par yet. And Cadillac still suffers from a lack of a standard barer. Sorry, as nice as the Escalade is – even if it is the current embodiment of what a Cadillac should be – it’s no herald of American Luxury at it’s best.
“But frankly, just like with the last batch of Euro wannabe cars, Cadillac is learning the hard way that nobody really wants a “german Cadillac””.
That has nothing to do with that and there is no such thing as a German Cadillac. Cadillac is building Cadillac, period! Consumers in this day and age want over-engineered luxury cars no matter what luxury brand they are shopping. Car enthusiasts complained that Cadillac did not building fun to drive cars back in the 80s-early 00s and now since they are building the best rear-wheel drive cars in each respective class, people still bitch and complain.
The main reason why the ATS and CTS are not selling is lack of prestige and image that has not caught up with the well engineered cars which are currently great.
The current CTS is being view by most consumers as value luxury and the market is currently in sticker shock and don’t fully understand that the CTS is now a full time mid-size luxury sedan few people know about.
It will take couple of generations or successors, maybe longer, of the current models when Cadillac will be view on the same level like the competition from Germany and Lexus.
And styling is subjective but Cadillacs are the best looking cars in class right now and have one of the highest and best looking interiors as well.
Im not a big fan Cadillacs wedged shape body… Cadillac had for years…all I want for Cadillac is for a straight body and belt line……not looking like its diving into the ground…..on todays Caddy the rear looks so fat and the front looks mismatched….the only Caddy I like the look of …is the Escelade….and the CTS and CT6 are OK
maybe I’m being a little too harsh…the Caddys are nice…but they doent break new ground.
What new ground is BMW breaking?
Cause the Cadillac V-series is not playing games.
And have you seen a Lexus?- since most of your posts usually refer to the styling of a car- it along with the Toyota division have the worst looking fascia’s and grills in the automotive world IMO.
Good day Rye
If people want to buy a BMW 3 series, they will do that, and they do.
Why buy an American imitation 3 series with no resale value, a cheap instrument cluster, and a sea of cheap black plastic in the interior.
Add bad fit and finish, bad paint quality, noisy and unrefined engines, and a lack of prestige, and the sales are explained.
Why are you trolling? Any of what you said is not true and subjective. The interior of the ATS is better than the 3 series and the old power trains was just as refined and quite. The updated power trains for ’16 will be better if not to some degree better than the competition since GM has cylinder deactivation and stop/start technology of the 3.6 NA and 3.0 TT while the 2.0 has only stop/start technology. All power trains will get the new 8 speed automatics.
I test driven the BMW 3 series, and I don’t think it sounds any better than the ATS in terms of engine refinement.
The ATS with its few shortcomings, I would easily take over the 3 and 4 series any day of the week. I don’t care for the mundane styling of the 3 series too much
The key here is to make them want to buy a German Imitation of a Cadillac. Fix the cars and earn the trust and image and you will win the segment. It takes time and money.
As of now GM has the suspension better than BMW and they just need to continue to sort out the interior and get their new dedicated Cadillac only engines. Both are on the way.
The M will at one point here be competing to be as good a the V. As of now on the track it already is.
FYI noisy engines I will give you but fit and finish is not any worse than the BMW. As for quality BMW has had their own issues of late and their present cars are no where as well sorted as their past cars.
Cadillac’s ATS buyers might be feeling what CTS buyers are as they’re feeling short changed by the turbocharged 2.0L 4-cyl engine as Cadillac needs to bring back the LFW V6 a naturally aspirated version of the twin-turbo 3.0L V6 used by the upcoming CT6. And with cylinder deactivation so the V6 will function as either a V4 or 3-cyl engine, mileage of the 3.0L V6 may not be too much different than the turbo 4-cyl; but best of yet.. it might be possible for Cadillac to make the 3.0L V6 avaialble by mid-year.
What Cadillac needs to do is complete their own line of engines and advancement in these engines.
The Chevy engines are great but they are not Cadillac engines. There is little perceived value in a Chevy engine to someone who is paying twice the price of a Chevy Camaro with the similar engine.
Yes there are some who have no issues and love the car but there is a larger segment that expect more for their money and more advanced technology in a car like this at the higher prices.
GM understands this and is now in the works to give Cadillac their own engines. This will help much over time but it not going to happen next year.
The 3.0 was good start but It too did not go far enough.
Look at the engine technologies used in the others in class and while not always needed it sells cars.
I spent time with some people who Lamborghini’s yesterday. They were mostly engineers and love technology for the sake of technology. The one is MFG for one he has that he can not find replacement parts for. While to most that is a pain he is finding great joy in the fabrication of these missing parts.
While these men love technology they are not alone. Many see this as driving the leading edge and the future in many cases and want to be the first to do so. That is why BMW is doing things like electric Turbochargers and such.
As for the Turbo 4 it is a very advanced engine. It even has much more power that can be easily had if they just went Premium Fuel Required. I know because I did with mine.
The bad part is the ATS engine is the same thing originally found in a HHR SS to even the new Malibu. Not something that enhances the image of a Cadillac. Now for my HHR hell I can say I have a Cadillac engine in it along with my steering wheel borrowed from a ZR1 too. Makes my day but does nothing for image of the other two cars. GM is fixing this mistake of the old GM and it should help. Parts sharing is ok if you hide it well.
Just saw a commercial for BMW’s 3-series of how for 40 years and 6 generations their car was it; Cadillac needs to make a commercial emphasizing how the ATS after it’s first year of production is the car everyone is chasing and holds the mantle of ultimate driving machine.
Cadillac doesn’t need their own engines as much as they need distinction like a driver controlled actuator on the turbo wastegate to increase boost of the turbocharged 2.0L 4-cyl engine for 10 seconds to increase engine output from 265 hp to 300 hp with the same on the LF4 twin-turbo 3.6L V6 so output for 10 seconds is closer to 490-500 hp.
