30,000 Preorders Tallied Up For New Opel Astra K Hatchback

For Opel, the all-new Astra is far from just the next evolution of its hot-selling hatchback; it also marks the start of a new era for the company, according to Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann.

“Our new Astra is the best Opel we have ever built and it represents a real quantum leap for Opel in a number of ways,” said the exec in his opening remarks. “The entire team has done an outstanding job on the new Astra. It’s another chapter in our comeback story.”

Buyers seem to have already taken a shine to the new era of Opel. For example, the company already has taken some 30,000 orders since opening the order books for the hatchback in June. Meanwhile, order books for the Astra Sports Tourer – which accounts for 30 percent of all Astra sales – will open in a few weeks.

Opel’s packed a lot into the new Astra, but it’s managed to boil down its key attributes in just two words: efficiency and connectivity. The former comes courtesy of the the Astra K’s new lightweight D2xx platform, which helped the Astra K shed 200 kilograms (441 lbs) over its predecessor. And the range of new engines are the perfect match, says to the bespectacled Doctor. The new engines propel the Astra to the top of its segment.”

Combine the Astra’s lightweight and diverse engine family with its built-in connectivity– a next-generation IntelliLink infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and Opel OnStar with 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot–and its clear the company has put serious effort into its goal of offering technologies from the luxury class to Opel customers at reasonable prices.

The new Astra K hatchback will officially launch in its home market of Germany on October 10.
