Although we’ve seen photos of it for quite some time now, Opel has formally unveiled two members of the new Astra K family (hatchback and Sports Tourer) to the world and also revealed plans to launch an aggressive product offensive from 2016 through to 2020 during the 2016 Frankfurt Motor Show. Even GM CEO Mary Barra was on hand to assist Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann with the unveiling of the wagon Sports Tourer.
Unfortunately, we were stuck on the other side of the pond and missed the chance to see the announcement in person. Luckily, some chaps at Opel filmed the whole ordeal and condensed it into easily digestible three-minute chunk, which we’ve posted above.
One thing to note before diving in: the whole press conference is in German and, for once, YouTube’s closed captioning system seems to have done a semi-decent job in translating Neumann’s remarks (though more than anything we’d have to chalk that up to the execs precise annunciation).
Both Neumann and Barra seem genuinely excited to launch the new Astra. Most of all, we’re happy to see GM using its cash to help rejuvenate the brand with a whole batch of new models.
We’d also encourage those hungry for a bigger helping of press conference action to check out the full 17-minute announcement. With both snack-sized and full-sized videos on offer, there is no reason to miss Opel’s big reveal.

I don’t get the excitement. It’s not a very attractive car.
