2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Spied: Shows Off Monster Hood Extractor, Rear Spoiler

When looking back at the accomplishments and product offerings of the fifth-generation Camaro family, it doesn’t take much to understand that Chevrolet isn’t going to have just the sixth-generation 2016 Camaro SS as its top-performing model. Case in point are the recently published spy photos of an upcoming high-performance model. It’s more than likely a next-generation 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

From the photos, we can clearly see a gaping hood extractor, a substantial wickerbill spoiler, larger rocker panels, and an aggressive front splitter. The wheels are similar to the outgoing fifth-generation Camaro ZL1. The stance appears wider than lesser models, as well.

Keen spotters will note the two development mules spotted actually feature slightly different bodywork, which could suggest an optional downforce aerodynamics kit, rather than the whole kitchen sink being standard. We’re seeing similar things with both the Corvette Stingray and Z06, 2016 Cadillac ATS-V and 2016 Cadillac CTS-V.

Speaking of the CTS-V, it’s likely that the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will also feature the 6.2L supercharged LT4 V8 engine, which builds on the supercharged 580 hp LSA engine from the last-gen model. In the case of the Cadillac, the engine produces 640 horsepower. Meanwhile, the LT4 in the Z06 pumps 650 kicking horses. It would be logical to assume that the new Camaro ZL1 would then produce between 640 and 650 horsepower with this new powertrain, which is a substantial jump from before. And if it drives anything like the third-generation CTS-V, we’re going to have one hell of a performer on our hands.

    2. Considering its gonna weigh about 1,000 pounds less than a hellcat, it’s not gonna need nearly 800 hp to beat it.

  2. The people here and at Motor Trend made a mistake! The engine is actually going to be a triple-supercharged “LTX” V-8 with 777+ horsepower and 666+ lb-ft o’ torque, which is also going to power the 2017 Corvette Zora ZR1.

I heard about this on a Chevy Performance commercial!

  4. Motor Trend already tested the 2017 ZL1. It even has 77 more horsepower than the 700hp 2016/2017 Ford GT supercar. At least before we compared Camaros to GTs, we compared Mustangs to Corvettes! 🙂

It was tested against a $340k Ferrari, a $340k McLaren, and a $299k Lamborghini. It did the 1/4 mile in 11.3 seconds at 129.7 mph – even faster than the Challenger Hellcat’s 11.7 @ 125.4. Motor Trend will publish this in the December 2015 issue in the next couple of months.
