Those hoping for updates to the powertrain of the GMC Sierra 2500HD for the 2016 model year will be disappointed to find out that they’re not in the cards. That aside, the 2016 Sierra 2500 is getting several changes and updates.
To start, the color palette does away with four colors while adding three new ones:
Deleted Colors
- Sonoma Red Metallic
- Fire Red
- Bronze Alloy Metallic
- Emerald Green Metallic
New Colors
- Crimson Red Tintcoat Double Cab only
- Deep Garnet Metallic Crew Cab only
- Cardinal Red
The 2016 Sierra 2500 Heavy Duty also does away with four wheels and the I04 radio unit. It then adds the following equipment:
- Remote locking tailgate
- IntelliLink Radio audio system with 7″ color touch screen
- Wireless Charging
- New 20-inch polished aluminum wheels
- A new power steering system with active hydraulic assist and recirculating ball
- HD Radio (returns after being deleted last year)
In addition, the 2016 GMC Sierra 2500 adds manual tilt and telescoping steering wheel to the SLE Convenience Package on Double and Regular Cab models, the Z71 Suspension Package will now require 4WD, and the All-Terrain HD Package will only be available on Crew Cab SLT models.
As we’ve speculated previously, the exterior of the 2016 Sierra 2500 might get a refresh of sorts to keep it in line with the freshened 2015 GMC Sierra 1500. If it does, the change isn’t showing up on the RPO-level change sheet.

All this build up to high hp and tq numbers. And nothing. I’m very disappointed in gm. They are falling behind. And they are going to lose customers.
Let’s remember that it’s not all about power numbers here. It’s about capability that the engines deliver via their integration with frame and chassis. Also at play is the driving experience. The Ford Super Duties might have a similar capability ratings as GM’s HD trucks, but drive them back to back with actual max loads and you’ll be white-knuckling the Ford because it sucks to drive it.
James you say that you feel like GM is talking shit about the new Hp and Torque ratings in the new HD Trucks but then they don’t give us the new #’s. I don’t know if your aware but they aren’t putting the New more Powerful Duramax in until 2018 and we both know they don’t want to give anything away to the competition too far in advance. I drive a 2014 2500 HD with a Duramax and I can embarrass the competition with this Duramax, I can’t wait to get my hands on the New 2018 Denali with the New Duramax!!!
Two important features are missing in GM HD trucks are factory 5th wheel hitch and bed camera (to hook up a 5th wheel)
Spot on Lex. They need to offer both. And push button start on high end models.
A bed camera (and light) would be nice when backing in my truck camper, but it does have remote start. I use it every morning 🙂
