You may have already read about the various changes and updates in store for GM’s 2016 model year heavy duty pickup trucks — the 2016 Chevy Silverado HD and 2016 GMC Sierra HD. Among these is a new steering system.
Though we don’t know much about the new steering system, GM’s order guides say that the system is an active hydraulic assist and recirculating ball setup, and that customer benefits include:
- Ease of Handling
- Ability to Hold Road
- Stability at High Speed
- Steering Feel/Response
- Maneuverability
- Stability Control Assist
The system is only available on Crew Cab or Double Cab models and carries the NV8 (reference-only, rather than free-flow) RPO code.

If recirculating ball is the new system – what was the old system?
So they’re going from rack and pinion back to a steering box?
No The 2500 and 3500 do not have Rack Pinion now they have recirculating ball. Only the 1500 has rack and Pinion.
Ahh. Didn’t know that. Thank ya, Wayne.
What a waste of time this article was. Chris doesn’t tell us anything new… Doesn’t tell us what it replaced. Do some research before you write an article!
