Previously, we reported the iconic Vauxhall Astra GSi was back on the table for British buyers, who share a fondness of the nameplate. The move would allot for a Focus ST competitor, while the Vauxhall Astra VXR nameplate would be reserved for a Focus RS rival.
According to Motoring, that is exactly what the General Motors UK brand is up to.
Now that that hot hatch market is booming more so than ever in recent years, Ford is readying its most hardcore RS model yet. To counter that, Vauxhall will be ready to challenge the performance hatchback with a hardcore 2016 Astra VXR, rumored to feature somewhere around 295 hp.
This would allow a revived 2016 Astra GSi name to square off solely with the likes of Focus ST and Volkswagen GTI. The Astra GSi is rumored to feature a less powerful, but still potent, 2.0-liter turbocharged engine making 246 hp.
In terms of when we’ll see a new Astra GSi, don’t expect it to arrive any sooner than the middle of 2016, while the new 2016 Astra itself arrives this September. And, obviously, the power play would transition into an Opel Astra OPC and Opel Astra GSi.

And we’ll see a US version of this when…..?? Yeah, a rhetorical question, unfortunately.
If they do align VXR with RS, then either they supercharged the 2.0 and DI or they make something along the line of 2.3 Twinscroll. But again probably won’t bring it to America mostly because we can’t have nice things here or, Chevy thinks it would cannibalize the Camaro sales.
