This Is The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze

Today is the day that General Motors has finally pulled the sheet off the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Cruze sedan. With it comes an all-new design inside and out, a new chassis, new powertrains, technology… you name it. It’s new.
As previewed with the four other vehicles Chevrolet has revealed previously this year, the design adopts a very angular and modern aesthetic that bears a very striking family resemblance to the 2016 Chevrolet Volt, while the rear tail lamps appear to carry some Corvette design elements that have also found themselves in larger Chevy sedans. Sharp. Overall, the length of the 2016 Cruze is 2.7 inches longer than before, with an inch of that making up an addition to the wheelbase. Meanwhile, there’s an extra 2 inches of rear legroom.
Despite the increase in proportions, the 2016 Cruze is 250 pounds lighter than before, with a 44-pound subtraction coming from the all-new 1.4L EcoTec turbocharged engine. Now with a top-mounted intercooler, direct injection, and an estimated 150 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. There’s also a new, lighter, smaller 6T35 six-speed automatic transmission that will be mated to the engine — as will a six-speed manual transmission. The expectation is to surpass 40 miles per gallon on the highway, but official numbers are still a ways out.
Naturally, one engine option isn’t enough. So Chevrolet is also equipping the 2016 Cruze with the new 1.6L Whisper Diesel engine, as seen in several Opel models. NVH levels on the oil-burner are said to be best-in-class, according to Chevrolet, and hence the nickname of the mill.
Technology (and stuff) is also a big talking point here. With Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, along with OnStar 4G LTE capability, a sleek 8-inch touch screen, and a suite of active safety features to help prevent you from drifting into a ditch while operating all the cabin gizmos, the 2016 Cruze should be sufficient enough to make any Silicon Valley techie blush.

Chevrolet is 2 for 2 today. The new Cruze looks sporty and sleek. With the tech and efficiency improvements plus a hatchback I think it will improve on it’s 3rd place standing in compact sales within a couple of years.
I am very impressed with the 155hp/177ft lbs AND 40mpg. This car is going to perform a lot better than any other car in its class. 12 more hp and 48 more ft lbs than the Civic. Similar comparision to the Corolla. Well done, Chevy!
I think the real question on everyone’s mind is which character will this be in the next Transformers movie?
OUTSTANDING JOB CHEVY. It looks promising. We will eventually get a diesel and a hatch to go with this so me thinks it will go higher on the charts.
Geat design – – love the headlights. Yes, it looks Volt but both cars plus Malibu have been inspired by Impala which is a good thing.
Finally Chevrolet has designed an attractive, aggressive and unique grill. It looks sophisticated and upmarket.
This vehicle is dramatically different than the Chinese varient. I’m convinced that it was an emergency face-lift, as implied by Automotive News. The Chinese Cruze looked dated and would have been a sales dud in the US where competition is so fierce.
Chevrolet finally has a consistent design language that isn’t overly bland, same, conservative or ordinary. Chevrolet has also resisted the urge to overdo character lines or trademark design cues
Not an emergency facelift… planned the whole time.
The 250 Pounds is big on a car that was only around 3200-3350 to start with. Add the more power, torque and space and you have a winning formula even before the styling.
I love this blue.
Chevy is being more consistent as they have had a core group that has not had to deal with changes in crises constanly or management by committee as in the past.
Just wait till the new Malibu is released it too will wow many people. I expect both this car and the Bu to be in the top 2 or 3 in their respective segments in 1-2 years.
Looks great. Now when do we see the hatchback?
Same question I have. Anybody know?
I’d love for it on the new Astra hatch to be the basis. It is a bad match for Buick but would be a work of art wearing a Chevrolet bow tie.
The lack of SS is as depressing as it was anticipated.
When have you ever seen a performance variant be released or announced at the same time as the “mainstream” version?
Make a v6 twin turbo rear wheel drive, and I’ll mortgage the house to buy one,,,,
Nice! but too much shiny chrome inside.. would have liked brushed aluminum style instead.
I was worried that they would have a hard time replacing the current Cruze. This car is real nice. I love the rear of the car too. To be honest I think this looks better than the 16 Malibu. They are going to sell a tim of these.
Hopefully they won’t charge an obscene price for the diesel and then wonder why no one buys it. I am glad they addressed the back seat, which is too small. The Malibu had the same problem. Also I would have liked to see a hatchback version that can fit my dog cage. The jetta sport wagon basically has no competitor and it’s getting old.
Not bad…..Oriental looking no doubt, but quite handsome overall. The weight reduction is a plus, but the interior design is definitely this car’s biggest improvement.
Interestingly enough, its a nice looking car. I didn’t expect it to be so good looking, after seeing the foreign market version. Having owned 3 current generation, Cruzes, I welcome the changes. Of course, GM always shows the most loaded version, and this is no exception. Also flaunting the RS package. Interested to see just how dumbed down the standard base model is. I’ve owned all Eco models, which the 6MT is barely 3,000 pounds, so taking 250 pounds off that vehicle would net a vehicle weight, under 3,000 pounds, for sure. The HP bump is a nice little improvement. I’ve been enjoying an increase in HP, for sometime with the current vehicle. Many tuning companies offer solutions of 40+hp and 70+ pounds feet of torque. Ive been running this combination, for a while, and this is how the Cruze should have come, from day one.
Im not holding my breath for an SS version, although, I believe its warranted, considering the Cobalt Eventually came in an SS, version. No reason you can’t do the 2.0T, 274 HP power plant from the ATS, in this vehicle. Beef up the brakes, and add some better suspension, and we’ll have a runner.
Also, keep in mind that under the new overlap crash test, the previous Cruze didn’t fair all that well. Interested to see how this will do.
I wish folks would let the SS thing Die down. Look back and see just how many Cobalt SS were sold in a Coupe and then the Sedan. Until there is a coupe it is a still born issue.
This car is about selling to families and getting the volume sales to the mass market. It is not a sports sedan and does not pretend to be.
I own a HHR SS and know the numbers sold and love the performance aspect but I also have a grip on reality that then numbers of a sedan here will not be enough.
I believe GM has other options they are working on that may do better but we need to let them fix the cars they have to be all they can be and segment leaders.
Lets let them finish what they are working on and I think you will be better satisfied with the results.
I agree on the SS thing. A top line Cruze in Canada can run just over $30,000 CAN. Add an SS package with better engine/transmission, suspension tweaks, wheels, tires, plus ground effects, etc and you’d have a $35,000 Cruze. Geeze, a 2LT Camaro with 323 hp, heated leather, heads-up, etc starts at $37,500.
Which one would all these SS demanders choose now?
When I bought my HHR SS it was stickered at $28,000 and yet I hear many cry it needed AWD. That would have added 2-3 thousand to the price. Do you think many would have been impressed with a $30K HHR SS? Not really.
Even then I was able to get the dealer down to $21750 out the door. Not much meat on that bone and with AWD it would have been leaner.
Funny thing is one just like mine just sold here with nearly the same low miles for $18K. I guess low production and sales do help resale if you take care of it. LOL!
It may make a good down payment on a Canyon for me in a year or two,
The fact that the sales volumes were low on the Cobalt SS and HHR SS was to be expected. The two vehicles were outsold by every major competitor and, as we all know, the market for hotted-up compacts is pretty small nowadays. Even so, GM made a profit on every single Cobalt SS and HHR SS it sold, and it can make an even bigger profit now due to:
1. Great volumes of scale of the D2 platform
2. Less incentives and sales channel throughput than before
Variants of these vehicles don’t need to sell in huge numbers to turn a nice profit. Look to Ford, Honda, and Subaru for examples.
That’s just it, I think it would be a huge mistake in the first place not to offer a coupe. The civic and civic si coupes remain unchallenged.
Not to mention:
Hyundai Elantra is avaialble as a sedan, 5-door hatch, and 2-door coupe
Kia Forte (same story)
Toyota Corolla is also available as a sedan, coupe (Scion TC) and hatch (Toyota Matrix)
Honda Civic (sedan and coupe, as you mentioned)
