Some time ago, Buick was involved in motorsports. The tri-shield had a stake in NASCAR, road racing and GTP racing. That’s a bit of a far cry from today, where Chevrolet and Cadillac have taken over General Motors racing programs, respectively.
But, the 1980s were a different time. Hair metal was cool, and hairspray was even cooler. We stumbled upon this vintage promotional video from Buick in 1987, which also was attempting to train its dealers to incorporate Buick’s exciting motorsports accomplishments into increased sales.
Those accomplishments included a 1985 pole position at the Indy 500, and a one-lap qualifying record of 214 mph with a Buick turbocharged V6.
As exciting as the accomplishments were that are detailed in the accompanying video, we’re not entirely sure they transitioned into the showroom. Besides the legendary Buick Regal T-Type, Grand National and GNX, “excitement” wasn’t really a Buick ideal. That was Pontiac’s thing, remember?
The traditional trans-atlantic American announcer accent paired with the downright awful synth music is enough to have a gander at this VHS quality video. Prepare yourself for a nostalgia bomb.

Whats to laugh at? They had a hell of a racing program in the 80’s,
NASCAR, IMSA, Indy Car and other series they were winners in all.
Ditto – who’s running this place now? Not as good as it once was……
Scott3,
The “stifle your laughter” comment was in regard to the 1980s production effects of the film, not Buick’s track record in motorsports, to provide some clarification.
Cheers,
Sean
