The slogan for Opel’s new ride-sharing service, CarUnity, says it all: better off sharing. Opel sees the introduction of CarUnity as an essential step to introduce the brand to consumers who haven’t yet decided to purchase a vehicle, and do not own one.
CarUnity, now available to download, is a free app for smartphones to let users rent out their car, and seek out a car for rental. The innovative program, the first from any manufacturer, aims to curb resource consumption, and is not limited to only Opel vehicles.
“We are taking a new approach with CarUnity. Opel is the first automaker to offer carsharing for everyone. CarUnity enables individual mobility everywhere in Germany – at any time and with greatest flexibility”, explains Chief Marketing Officer Tina Müller. “People in Germany can offer their car for rental or rent a car with the free app. Private carsharing fits to our brand – after all, approachable is one of our brand values.”
Users may decide who is able to rent their car. For example, a CarUnity user can say only their Facebook friends may rent their car, or people invited into their personal CarUnity circle via the application. Each transaction takes only seconds, and may be an easy way for users to earn quick cash, and get a ride on a moment’s notice.
CarUnity will be limited to Germany, first launching in the Rhine-Main region. Opel employees and dealers have already made their Opel vehicles available for rental as you read this.
