Opel Climbs On As Lead Sponsor Of Formula Student

Opel has recently taken a more active stance in supporting young engineers, it says, and now it’s doubled-down on its commitment by signing a three-year contract as the main sponsor of the international educational motorsport competition known as Formula Student.
“With this we make a clear statement regarding our long-term commitment to passionate and talented people. The involvement of many Opel employees in this established student racing series to date has already been a valuable investment in our own future,” said Charlie Klein, Vice President of Vehicle Engineering. “Now we are going a step further, and in addition to the university teams we promote, we are also sponsoring the entire series.”
While many across the pond might be unfamiliar with the race series, it’s an interesting concept none-the-less, as teams are responsible for the entire vehicle development process. Young engineers begin to learn crucial parts of the puzzle, like aligning product attributes, manufacturing methods and economic efficiency.
Now in its tenth season, the breadth of competition has swelled dramatically over the years, with 600 teams from 52 counties, including the U.S., set to take part this year. That number is up considerably over the 115 teams from 24 countries that took part in last year’s events.
Formula Student German (FSG) will take place July 30 – August 2 at Hockenheim circuit and Opel will support the following six teams:
TU DART Racing (TU Darmstadt)
Scuderia Mensa (Hochschule Rhein-Main)
HAWKS Racing (Hochschule Hamburg)
Fast Forest (TH Deggendorf)
KaRaT Racing (TU Kaiserslautern)
THM Motorsport (TH Mittelhessen Gießen).
