Jan Magnussen and the No. 63 Corvette C7.R crashed hard into the wall during round 2 of qualifying for the 24 Hours of Le Mans earlier today, bringing out a red flag and ending the session about 40 minutes early.
The No. 63 Corvette was making a fast left hander through the Porsche Curves when it became unstable and slammed hard into the outside wall, sending it sliding backward across the track. As the announcers point out in the video of the incident below, Magnussen was braking hard and changing down as he approached the entry of the next corner, possibly because he already knew something had gone wrong mechnically.
Luckily Magnussen was talking and alert when he exited the car, and according to a Tweet from Corvette Racing’s Tommy Milner, Jan is okay and “back in the garage,” at the track. Prior to the accident the No. 63 Corvette had set a time of 3:55.963, making them fourth fastest in the GTE Pro class. The No. 64 entry was fifth fastest with a time of 3:57.081.
