General Motors South Africa Unveils Isuzu KB Serengeti Special Edition

In a rather unique business arrangement, General Motors is responsible for marketing and selling Isuzu light trucks in South Africa. As such, The General recently unveiled a special edition of the midsize Isuzu KB named Serengeti Special Edition.

To start: the Isuzu KB, which is also called Dmax in some markets, is essentially a rebadged variant of the International-market Chevrolet Colorado, albeit with an Isuzu diesel motor. And the Serengeti Special Edition is named after the wondering planes of the Serengeti ecosystem, a geographical region in Africa.

“The new Serengeti Special Edition has the looks and appeal to attract attention on the road and set its owners apart from the rest,” says General Motors South Africa Isuzu Brand Manager, Mlungisi Nonkonyana.

The Serengeti Special Edition starts out as KB 300 LX Double Cab — the flagship of the series. Available in the complete range of KB colors, the truck adds a host of exterior and interior enhancements:

Exterior

  • Bumper guard with silver cents
  • Side steps with silver accents
  • B-pillar blackout
  • Silver roof rails
  • Chrome sports bar
  • Towbar
  • 18-inch alloy wheels and all-terrain tires
  • Serengeti Edition decals and badging
  • Optional tonneau cover

Interior

  • Brushed silver, chrome, and black trim
  • Serengeti Special Edition carpets and chrome door plates
  • Power-adjustable leather seats

“Through special design and engineering development by our local team, we have created a truly unique and desirable bakkie, built for Africa. With distinctive styling features and an imposing stance, the Serengeti Special Edition not only makes a bold lifestyle statement but also looks set to tackle even the wildest weekend off-road adventure.”

Three Serengeti Special Edition models are available, each powered by Isuzu’s 3.0-liter D-TEQ diesel engine with 130 kW (174 horsepower) and 380 Nm (280 pound-feet) of peak torque. The mill is mated to either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission with a 4×2 drivetrain, or 4×4 with a manual gearbox only.

The KB Serengeti benefits from the truck’s 4×4 system, which features a Terrain Command rotary switch control that allows the driver to switch between rear-wheel drive (2H), four-wheel drive with rear differential locking (4H) and low-range (4L), with shift-on-the-fly capability up to 100 km/h (62 mph).

The KB also still offers healthy levels of capability, including towing of up to 3,500 kg (7,716 pounds) and a suspension system that ensures occupant safety and comfort, no matter what the road or trail conditions are.

All Isuzu KB models are sold with:

  • 5-year/120 000 km fully-comprehensive warranty and roadside assistance program
  • 5-year/unlimited mileage anti-corrosion warranty
  • 5-year/90 000 km service plan

Service intervals are 15,000 km, or twelve months for all derivatives.

The Isuzu KB Serengeti Special Edition went on sale June 8th 2015. Models and prices are as follows:

Model Price (South African Rand)
KB Serengeti 300 LX Manual Double Cab: 468 400
KB Serengeti 300 LX Auto LX Double Cab: 494 300
KB Serengeti 300 LX 4×4 Manual Double Cab: 522 600
