Opel should make up a majority of lost Chevrolet sales. It’s a pity that Chevrolet Europe could not have been maintained as a light truck brand because this would be a great growth engine for GM EU.
It’s really a pity that GM decided not to keep Chevrolet in Europe at all. It would have taken a bit of time to fix the image they have earned selling crappy Daewoos, but they could have been successful at it turning Chevy around — especially with the awesome new product like the new Cruze, Malibu, and upcoming crossovers. If Kia and Hyundai can co-exist in the same markets around thew world, there’s no reason that Opel-Vauxhall-Buick and Chevrolet can’t, either.
Here’s to hoping that Chevy makes a comeback to the EU in the next several years.
That would infringe on Opel’s Commercial division.
GM pulled Chevrolet to give Opel room to breathe so they wouldn’t then a light truck line to step on their toes.
what. comedy. Opel has to make up for all the losses .. this is still people’s opinions and ideas of things.
VAG group vw-audi-seat-skoda and so on . sells all of its products both in Europe and outside of Europe. sometimes it is still scary to read the forum gm. GM is already so great inside fighting with each other, hate and envy to fear. See what vag croup products. All the friends and co super. everything can not be divided and fighting among themselves. others are illegal. play together and work together and the relationship right.
GM is still a lot to learn and evolve. as well as the fans gm.
GM’s strategy is such that if you want to sell Opel products you need to stop the production of other goods or offering them. Comedy.
GM is competing and fighting for gm brand products aaahhhaaaa
There are a number of potential reasons for the fall in May sales.
1.) In the UK (GM’s biggest European market) there was a general election. The whole UK market experienced the lowest growth in 39 months, +0.2%. Only the premium German triumvirate performed well. Clearly there was caution from punters awaiting the election outcome before committing big money. the housing market also stalled in May.
2.) Whilst Corsa E has been available across Europe since January, it only launched in the UK in late March, and is only now becoming more visible on UK roads. This is madness … the UK accounts for nearly 40% of total European Corsa sales (It is Vauxhall’s biggest seller). As ever, the UK is last to market with new product, always having to run-down the previous generation stock.
3.) Thanks to an Italian press leak on Astra K nine months before it goes on sale in the UK, GME has had to publish a full launch pack. Again punters will hang back now, waiting for the new model. Astra K will be officially launched in Frankfurt in September. Given that Ellesmere Port in the UK is the lead Astra manufacturing plant, it will again be interesting to see how many months behind the rest of Europe before it begins appearing on UK roads. The UK is also Astra’s biggest market.
On the subject of light trucks, I agree we need them here in Europe as pick-ups (for leisure as opposed to hard-work) have become increasingly popular during the last 10 years. Opel/Vauxhall used to sell a re-badged Isuzu KB (built in the UK), but strangely abandoned this market in 2005, just as it was beginning to take-off. Even Mercedes is preparing to attack this sector!
Ideally the Corsa based Chevy Montana (Brazil and South Africa) and the Isuzu KB based Colorado should be available in Europe, but badged as Opel/Vauxhall. Sadly the bow-tie is damaged goods across Europe (aside from Camaro and Corvette) and it carries too much baggage from the ill-conceived Daewoo tie-up.
Good points all around. But I should say that the Isuzu KB is based on the Chevy Colorado rather than the other way around.
Actually, Colorado/D-Max is a JV between GM and Isuzu, with GM leading on the 1st generation model and the 2nd gen (current) being based on Isuzu’s own i-GRIP chassis. NA models use US sourced power-trains while the R.O.W. regardless of badging, use Isuzu mills, the majority being diesel powered.
Good post, just one small error – the Bedford KB25/26/41 & the later Vauxhall badged versions were not built in the UK they were imported from Japan fully built. Regarding the Astra K what has made things even worse is that Vauxhall have published the fact that it will sell for up to £2,200 LESS than the current car! I am the first to stick up for Vauxhall in the UK but the whole Astra K launch has been a farce, many lessons to be learnt!
The mid sized isuzu based pick up (Bedford KB & Vauxhall Brava) sold here from around 1976 to around 1998 & was quite successful in a niche segment. Perhaps GM should offer a pick up again & sell trucks as well.
