Community Question: Should Corvette Offer A One-Off Customization Program Like The Viper?

Everyone likes to be different, to stand out, be unique, not follow the crowd, whatever you want to call out. As soon as one person makes one thing trendy, flocks follow, only to find something new months later. Granted, vehicles are a little different but, then again, look at how many companies cater to aftermarket needs of every car imaginable.
The Viper team has tackled this issue head on, and has been allowing customers to customize to their heart’s content when ordering their very own example. The industry-first “1 of 1” Viper Customization Program has created 50 million different combinations. Included in those combinations are 16,000 exterior colors to choose from, and 48,000 stripe combinations, with Dodge announcing an expansion of the program to now include matte finishes.
The 2016 C7 Corvette exterior color options? Ten. Underwhelming when comparing the two, but the Corvette team has introduced a handful of design packages for the 2016 model year, which offer new striping and wheels to mix things up a tad.
But the Corvette Z06 does open up options should you be interested in the Corvette team’s engine build experience. Sure, it’s on the mechanical side of things, but it’s pretty darn cool nonetheless.

The way I see it GM shouldn’t be concerned with what Fiat does with the Viper. These are two vastly different cars and other than them both being American sports cars they are not really comparable. Maybe if the Vette was not selling well it’d make more sense, but the C7 seems to have been a hot commodity thus far with its current configurations.
I think this should be on certain models. Base Stingray? Not needed. Average person will be happy.
New ZR1 with mid-engine and +$200k price tag, by all means yes.
Viper is Dodge’s/SRT’s top dog; the Hellcat doesn’t get the same love. So here at GM as well. If GM does it, let it be on the one true king.
Absolutely more options needed, I loved the original 2014 C7 Lime Rock Green with the brownstone leather. I would also want the chromed Z06 style wheels to fit the C7. I couldn’t decide on the other colors when the LRG was discontinued so I bought a Cadillac ATS with the Obsession Red (candy apple red metallic), I would buy a Corvette Stingray in that colo,r but its not available. Give us more color and interior options. Chevrolet has done well with the stripe options I feel.
Most of the up scale MFG offer a custom program at a premium cost. GM should consider this on the top models only and only if they can make a profit. The Z06 should get now and the Zora should be offered with this option to get some custom things.
You do not have to get silly with this but paint seat and carpet materials should be open to a wider availability. May be some customer things time too.
Even a custom molded seat to the owner would be nice. Not hard to do.
But again only if they can make money doing so.
At this point the Viper is a non factor and may be at risk if Chrysler FIat continue with the money issues. We will see no major changes in the Viper as they can not afford to replace their volume RWD units for a couple more years as it is.
I’ve been to GM’s Bowling Green Assembly Plant. Pretty cool tour. The day of my visit there was a young guy there watching as his Corvette was being built. Extra Cool!! At the end of the production line it appeared like he was the first person to start his new car. His expression said it all. His Vette was a base model. Maybe his first one. Maybe his tenth. I have no idea. But it was obvious he had no problem paying extra for that experience. Involving the customer this way is smart business. Any way to make purchasing a vehicle fun and unique is worth it. That same day at the museum sat… 8 ?? new Vettes awaiting delivery to their new owners. Think of the stories their new owners will tell back home. Even the ones that bought the base model.
I think this program – whatever it is called – could be expanded to other models with success. Think of the retirees that are ordering their first Cadillac. Or their first luxury pickup. Or maybe their first new vehicle period. A Base Chevy of their choosing. How neat it would be to watch your vehicle being put together and being the first person to fire it up.
Ok about my comment on the Body covered Body Vents,I would like to modify it. Give the customer what they want as long as it is profitable to the company. I know you can’t offer everything to all of the different choices people want.
