A Look Into The Cult Following Of The 1970s GMC Motorhome

Some say it’s hard not to fall in love with a 1970s GMC motorhome once you’ve bought your first one. While this may not be the case for every single person, it certainly holds true for married couple Arnie and Florence Schwab. In fact, they decided to buy three more GMC motorhomes after purchasing their first one, according to Canada’s Driving.
The Schwabs aren’t alone in their fascination with these motorhomes. The owner of this Birch Haven motorhome gets to enjoy the following conveniences, all while on the road; independent air suspension with automatic leveling, a full bath and shower, a central vacuum system, kitchens with counter top blenders, and to top it off a Nutone ice crusher. Margaritas anyone?
This is certainly different from the technology GMC incorporates into their vehicles today.
There’s a slight downside if you ask us, and that’s the fuel efficiency of a motorhome. The Birch Haven utilizes the Oldsmobile Toronado V8 engine rated at 265 hp, and it is absolutely terrible on gas (of course). To wit, after driving it back home to Vancouver from Colorado, the owner spent $600 on gas. Yikes. He got a rather good deal on the motorhome, though, spending $16,000 on a vehicle that could’ve cost as much as $35,000 back in the day.

I really like these. Remember seeing one at a new car autoshow in the early 1970s. Quite impressive it was.
Could be a great opportunity for a retro-revival for the Professional Grade GMC.
