The Chevrolet Express (and its GMC Savana twin) is so old, that even GM’s 2009 bankruptcy ain’t got nothing on it. Seriously, the line of full-size vans was first launched in 1996 and then given a through refresh in 2003. For the 2015 model year, Chevy discontinued the half-ton Express 1500; the automaker is now giving the remaining Express 2500 and Express 3500 models some updates for the 2016 model year. The changes to the 2016 Chevy Express mirror those of the 2016 GMC Savana.
Every model — from the Express Passenger and Express Cargo to the Express Cargo Paratransit and Express Cutaway — receives at least the following updates:
- New, more powerful 220-amp alternator (optional)
- Dual isolated battery system (optional)
- AM/FM radio with auxiliary port remains standard, but an optional Chevrolet MyLink radio with navigation (not available on Express Cargo Paratransit) plus NavTraffic traffic info for navigation system replaces the legacy AM/FM stereo with MP3 CD/DVD player and navigation system
- Inside rearview mirror with Rear Vision Camera display
- Black outside heated, power-adjustable, manual-folding with single pane glass mirrors (optional)
- OnStar 4G LTE with Wi-Fi
- Six standard air bags, including frontal, side curtain and seat-mounted thorax
Here are the changes to the individual 2016 Chevy Express variants:
The 2016 Chevy Express Passenger van does away with the 8-passenger, 2-3-3 seating configuration and replaces the archaic AM/FM stereo with MP3 CD/DVD player and navigation system with a proper MyLink radio with navigation. What’s more, the 160-amp alternator is replaced with an optional 220-amp unit.
New features include NavTraffic navigation traffic service for the MyLink navigation system, OnStar 4G LTE with Wi-Fi, and an optional isolated second battery system. Rounding out the new features list is a new inside rearview mirror with an integrated rear-view camera, and optional new black single-pane outside mirrors that are heated, power-adjustable, and manual-folding.

This old soldier has fought well for 10 model years but is fading fast in he face of stiff competition from the likes of the Nissan NV2500, Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster.
GM has to do a drastic update or redesign immediately or decide to bring over a Opel commercial van like the Transit to continue the battle.
Chevrolet just decided to recommit to the medium duty truck market, it would be a shame to gain in that segment only to continue to lose ground in the commercial duty van segment.
Nice Upgrades but how bout a New Freakin Van!!!! 😉
We have a 1997 Express. We like Chev, BUTT will look at the new Ford vans w/ raised roofs. Chev vans now look like dinosaurs. 20 yrs and the same body style Buying a new 2016 Chev van looks like a 20 year old vehicle from the git go!!! Chev design engineers must have their hands tied on van body updates. We will be buying a 2016 full size van, apparently it will NOT be a Chev.
It’s now become the Crown Vic of vans.
Could you please explain why being a “crown Vic van” is so bad? Crown Vic was a good vehicle as far as I know. Personally, I like classic full-size sedans like ford cv, Lincoln tc and grand marquis ’cause they definitely had something modern cars lack
