Chip Ganassi Racing’s Tony Kanaan topped the leaderboards following IndyCar’s first practice for the upcoming double header weekend in Detroit.
Kanaan, who was clearly not phased by the light blue and pink Taylor Swift livery on his Chevrolet, lapped the 2.3-mile Belle Isle street course in 1:16.2931 at an average speed of 110.888 mph. Teammate Sage Karam shuffled in behind Kanaan with a time of 1:16.4935, just before the rookie had an off on Turn 3, putting out one of the sessions five red flags.
The only appearance from Team Penske on the podium was from Will Power, completing a lap of 1:16.7693 in his Chevrolet. Rounding out the top five was Simon Pagenaud in fourth with a time of 1:16.8734 and Helio Castroneves in fifth with a time of 1:16.8969.
