There’s a new, upcoming eight-part series on NBC Sports Network that’s sure to have countless Camaro fans glued to the TV.
Called Big Red: The Original Outlaw Racer, each one-hour episode will feature the legendary red Camaro as well as Dan and RJ Gottlieb, the father and son team behind it.
The series follows the story of Dan and RJ and the “Big Red Camaro” and all her trails and tribulations through The Silver State Classic, VARA’s Big Bore Bash, The Texas Mile, The Virginia City Hill Climb, Mojave Mile, SCTA El Mirage Land Speed Racing, Bonneville Speed Week and more.
Big Red first came to life in 1987 when the father-son duo decided to take a stock ’69 Camaro, stick a 540 ci Lingenfelter Big-Block V8 under the hood and head down to La Carrera Classica II in Mexico.
It didn’t go well– during a 150 mph left-hand turn steering components failed and the Camaro smashed into a rock wall. The Camaro was totalled but luckily RJ and co-driver Chris Kaufmann emerged unscathed. Though a failure, the race was the catalyst that set the Big Red Camaro in motion and on to a number of race victories, which includes winning La Carrera Classica III the very next year in a new Camaro that used the old Lingenfelter engine.
“I finally realized that with so much history behind us, it was a good time to tell the story of Big Red and talk about the experiences my team and I have had racing it,” said RJ. “The team has always stayed true to the ’69 Camaro body but most fans have not seen the internal evolution we’ve taken the car through. This series will take you on an insider’s look at Big Red and the team like never before.”
You can watch it all unfold starting Monday, July 27 at 9 p.m. (EST) on NBCSN. Wanna get caught up on Big Red before the show airs? Get more knowledge on the official Big Red website right here.
