“Our new Astra. It will redefine the compact car segment with German engineering, best-in-class connectivity, and emotional design,” says Opel-Vauxhall CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann in a new teaser video for the upcoming Astra K, which he’ll reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
Big words. Then, again, this is a big car for Opel.
Opel has built more than 24-million Astras and Kadetts in total and the new Astra K, the 11th generation vehicle, needs to continue the trend in order for the company to make good on its promise to return a profit next year.
“One word summarizes the new Astra from an engineering point of view,” says Neumann. The magic word? Efficiency.
Said to ride on the new, global D2xx platform – just like the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze – the new Opel-Vauxall Astra K will shed significant mass, while a new family of efficient, next-generation engines can be found under the hood.
Neumann also goes on to say the new car will be fun to drive yet easy on the wallet, continuing on a big list of promises but Opel’s frontman seems quite confident the new Astra will continue the brand’s upward trend.
“It’s not only more efficient; it’s awesome,” he says.
Check out the teaser clip of the 2016 Opel Astra below. Also, is it us, or does Dr. Neumann seem genuinely excited to launch the new car? Either way, he seems like one of the coolest CEOs you’ll ever meet.

Years of mismanagement has lead to GM maintaining two value brands, Chevrolet and Opel, for the US and European markets. Meanwhile, Ford can cover the same turf with one singular lineup and on top of that hold more market share on each continent.
Opel and Chevrolet (not Buick) should be the global hype brand. In Australia, Holden will be selling Opel based vehicles because they are better than Chevrolet offering.
The poor alignment of brands is a problem for China, too. The dumbed down value Cruze GM is offering there is pretty good proof of the problem.
GM must remain Dx22 thee times while Ford and Toyota see one C segment car globally with greater success. It is time for management to restructure by linking Opel and Chevy and then Buick with Cadillac in a majority of segments.
I’m somewhat confused by GM China presenting this year first an “all new Buick Exelle GT” (Chinese: Ying Lang GT) and then in April a new “sports sedan” called “Verano” in English and “Wei Lang” in Chinese.
Now, what was known as the “Excelle GT” in China is known as the “Buick Verano” in North America. Both are more or less the same as the Opel/Vauxhall Astra sedan.
The new chinese “Ying Lang” and “Wei Lang” differ slightly in their exterior, but unclear how much they differ in their dimensions. A GM China press release says that “Like the all-new Excelle GT, which was launched earlier this year, the Verano will serve as a strategic model in Buick’s bid for a stronger presence in China’s mid-range vehicle segment. ”
Can somebody clarify?
I gather that the Wei Lang is the new Verano that N America will be getting shortly.
Much like Cruze, it will probably under go done modification.
I’m not sure about the other model but expect that it is Delta 2 based.
