2016 Chevy Suburban Gets New Colors, Technology And More

Having made its debut for the 2015 model year as an all-new model, the K2XX-platformed, fourth-generation Chevrolet Suburban has been quite the hot commodity, despite a noticeable price increase. And for the 2016 model year, the full-size, extended-length Suburban is getting some welcome changes and updates that mirror those of the 2016 Chevy Tahoe.

To start, the 2016 Chevy Suburban replaces two exterior colors with two new ones:

Deleted Colors

  • Crystal Red Tintcoat
  • White Diamond Tricoat

New Colors

  • Siren Red Tintcoat
  • Iridescent Pearl Tricoat

Inside, the 2016 Chevy Suburban removes the integrated SD card reader in the center console as well as the AM/FM stereo with CD player, with the latter officially marking the end of an integrated CD player for the Suburban. Meanwhile, the large SUV gains the reconfigurable gauge cluster, head-up display (HUD), IntelliBeam headlamps, and Lane Keep Assist, which replaces Lane Departure Warning.

In addition, the 2016 Suburban gets the capless fuel fill system as standard equipment on all trim levels, the Theft Protection Package (UTT) adds the liftgate shield, and a revision to the Enhanced Driver Alert Package contains power-adjustable pedals, Forward Collision Alert, IntelliBeam headlamps, Lane Keep Assist and Safety Alert Seat.

Just like the 2016 Tahoe, the 2016 Chevy Suburban does not get GM’s new 8-speed transmission. It also doesn’t see GM’s 6.2L EcoTec3 L86 V8 engine or a diesel motor, even as options.

Here are the specific RPO-level changes:

Deletions

  • (GBE) Crystal Red Tintcoat exterior color is no longer available
  • (GBN) White Diamond Tricoat exterior color is no longer available
  • (IO3) AM/FM stereo with CD player audio system

New Features

  • (G1E) Siren Red Tintcoat exterior color
  • (G1W) Iridescent Pearl Tricoat exterior color
  • (UHS) Re-configurable cluster (Multi-color enhanced graphic)
  • (UV6) HUD (Head Up Display)
  • (TQ5) IntelliBeam headlamps
  • (UHX) Lane Keep Assist

Changes

  • (PCW) Enhanced Driver Alert Package – Now includes (JF4) Power-adjustable pedals, (UEU) Forward Collision Alert, (TQ5) IntelliBeam headlamps, (UHX) Lane keep assist and safety alert seat
  • (D07) Console, floor, with storage area-SD card reader has been removed from inside center console
  • (IO5) Audio system replaces (IO3) Audio system as the standard radio for 1LS trim
  • (U2M) SiriusXM Satellite Radio with HD has been replaced by two separate RPO Codes; (U2K) SiriusXM Satellite Radio and (U2L) HD Radio
  • (UTT) Now also includes liftgate shield
  • (UHX) Land keep assist, replaces (UFL) Lane departure warning
  • All trims come standard with capless fuel fill

  1. That’s All!
    Kind of Lame!

    1. What exactly were you expecting on a 1 year old platform? Besides wanting the 6.2L available in it, I’m pretty amazed at what is in these vehicles for technology. Most of these things in the past have been Escalade or perhaps Denali features at best but now are in the Tahoe/Yukons too.

  2. +2 Kind of Lame , I too was expecting to see the 8 speed and 6.2 plus a diesel option

    1. This is the only disappointment for me. But between the Cadillacs, Denali’s, High Countries, etc, GM does not have a plant that can produce enough 6.2L to put it across the board into every model of full size truck/SUV. It is unfortunate but building another plant or changing one over doesn’t happen over night.

    2. Diesel option won’t be available until after it has debuted in the Cadillacs, which is in the works as we speak. Like most things GM does, debut it in high end vehicles first and then trickle them down.

  3. So, how do you load DVD’s for the rear entertainment system being that they removed the CD player in the car?

    1. It’s 2015 MAN!

Four words: 4G LTE and Memory sticks.

Do they even make DVDs and more…or Blue ray for that matter? (thats sarcasm by the way)

  7. I hope that I can get a bench front seat AND safety features like blind spot sensing, etc on the 2016 Suburban (Chevy or GM) — this was not possible on the 2015!

    1. yes it was, I went last night and looked at the LT and LTZ suburban it had a bench and lane departure warning system.

  8. I like the improvements Chevrolet made in the Suburban for 2016. However I would like to see MyLink be expanded to the LS trim. Let’s hope they do that in the 2017 models.

  9. I rented a 2015 suburban and have been driving for a week. I have to tell you that this vehicle is the best of all the luxury SUVs. I’ve driven almost all foreign lux SYVs, but it beats it all. Love the technologies and the comfort. I just wish I could afford to buy one for myself.

    1. You have a point here. GM said they needed to save labor costs so they move to China,
Mexico. and Russia. Instead of controlling the price they raise it to insane levels only
a politician can afford and some Hollywoods. So much for saving money by moving out
of the country, maybe they did and greed overwhelmed management? Ford is building
in Mexico along with Nabisco. Good for them I hope management has to move to Russia and Mexico it would be just reward. You want a American car buy Toyota or a Honda that’s as close as your going to get.

  10. They should have offered the 6.2L and 8 speed as an option on the LTZ. This would have satisfied many a buyer. I have thrown Fords expedition into the mix now, more horsepower and torque than the 5.3L and almost 10k less money similarly equipped.
I wonder how long Chevy will let Ford reel them in by losing the power/torq wars as well as the major magazine reviews, before they decide to offer an upgrade to the power train??

  11. Why are the mirrors so small? The mirrors on the Escalade are so much more appropriate. I have a 2012 Suburban, but have rented a 2015 Suburban twice. The mirrors are really the only thing I didn’t love about it.
(Well, that and I’d love it if dark blue was an option)

  12. No CD? Ok I don’t want the truck its that simple. WE do not download music to memory cards, its
a ripoff of major proportions. We still record music onto cassettes anytime we want and find
the quality as good as it gets. My collection of CD’s is huge and now can not use them in the
car, disgusting. We have a 04 burbon and found it to be the best vehicle we have ever
had but now its time to trade while it is better than new with 160,000 miles. Was looking forward to the 2016 but will now buy the 2015 or older, don’t like heads up displays either. Also noticed the load
floor is very high leaving the receiver hitch up in the air. Also found out the load floor will no longer
take a sheet of drywall. These are not improvements.

  14. I used to have a 97 Suburban w the cloth bench seat, 350 motor & Metric 700 transmission. As most of you know the TH400 was/is the best tranny ever built, & the 700 was the 400 w OD.
I recently tried to purchase an 03 Suburban Z70. It had everything I wanted short of the Duramax. But at least it had the 5.7 350.
Altho it was thru Autonation, I assumed that the vehicles were interchangeable thru dealerships. The guy sent me to this out of town dealer where it was. I saw, liked. We got back to the original dealer. I told him I wanted it.
“Why didn’t you bring it back?”
No one told us. He had another person drive us there & apparently told that guy to bring it back.
After much runaround he said I couldn’t get it bc even though they’re all kinda associated they are still individual dealerships & everyone has to get their cut. In other words they would lose $ if they got it for me. I don’t know what the difference was if we had driven it back. My bad for being a nice guy.
Instead I ended up with a Yukon XL w the gutless 5.0 or 5.3 whatever they want to call it. Too small & powerless an engine for that size. Learning experience I guess.
Anyways I came across this blog bc I’ve always wanted to see about getting an extended length Suburban w the 6.2 Duramax. Of course I didn’t know if they made them or was the extended length only seen in movies.
After reading this, it seems like they finally made one (?) but unfortunately as pointed out they forgot the power again.
GM has always been my favorite maker (as a former mechanic from the 70’s & 80’s where GM took a dive for a long time). And I’ve always thought GMC was a touch above the rest w trucks. Now I’m reading something different. Do these guys ever listen to customers or are they always in Lala land imagining themselves to know better than the customers? Kinda like 1600 Pennsylvania Ave & the likes. GM has had the potential to leave the rest behind in the dust. Unfortunately, as shown here, they are failing to live up to that potential again. God forbid I should ever go Ford or Dodge. But I think they’re driving potential customers to do just that, incl old ones. Or as 1 indicated, by older models. And how they can be so shortsighted as to not offer the Duramax on these is unbelievable, let alone removing the CD decks.
Oh well. Back to my gutless green wonder. Hopefully they will see the light before it’s too late.
