Corvette Racing Qualifies Fourth, Fifth At Long Beach

Corvette Racing posted their fastest ever lap around the street circuit at Long Beach yesterday, but it wasn’t enough to put either of the yellow C7.Rs on pole. Jan Magnussen was the team’s fastest driver, qualifying fourth in the No. 3 C7.R, while Oliver Gavin qualified behind him in fifth after a “mega frustrating” session.

Magnussen, who won the Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase at Long Beach last year, posted a time of 1:17.739 (91.136 mph) around the confined street circuit. Despite experiencing car troubles after making contact with a Corvette DP, Gavin shuffled in behind him with a nearly identical time of 1:17.756 (91.116 mph).

Gavin explained why the qualifying session was a bit of an annoyance for him post-session.

“It looked like we were getting a good run on a new tire, and coming out of Turn 6 into Turn 8, I’m behind a DP car and he’s braked pretty much at the normal spot and then just continued to brake into the apex,” Gavin explained. “He pretty much parked at the apex and I ran into the back of him. We did some damage to our car and we spent most of the session trying to fix it. We were able to go back out at the end, but the car wasn’t quite right.”

The green flag will wave on the Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase at Long Beach at 4:05 p.m. tonight.
