2016 Chinese Chevrolet Malibu Shows Face In Shanghai

While North America moves on from the eighth-generation Chevrolet Malibu to enjoy the ninth-generation 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, China receives a heavily reworked 2016 Malibu based on the current platform.

While much may seem the same, the platform and car as a whole has been heavily engineered to suit Chinese needs. Chevrolet says the new styling direction falls in line with the latest “Designed to raise your heartbeat” direction. That means muscular body lines and enhanced body proportions are found throughout the sheetmetal.

Combating the limited rear-legroom problem, the 2016 Chinese Malibu has become longer in proportion with clever engineering. China can thank the Aussies for that, as much development on this 2016 Malibu was completed in Oz.

Chevrolet calls the headlights up front “eagle eyed” in style, and flow into the signature Chevrolet dual-port grille. The dual-element tail-lamps in the rear are said to have been inspired by the first-generation Chevrolet Malibu.

The 2016 Malibu’s engine offerings are familiar to Chinese buyers. The 2.4-liter EcoTec SIDI four-cylinder and 2.0-liter DVVT engine solider on, but are paired with a new six-speed automatic transmission.Chassis feel has been specifically tuned for Chinese driving conditions with a sport infused feel.

Chevrolet hopes these updates cater to the younger Chinese consumer base, who increasingly have more and more buying power.

  1. This is the front end it should have been given to begin with in the US when it debuted back in 2013

    1. I agree. The 2016 version here is dog ugly.

We own a 2010 and to date, find that one to be the best looking model, besides this one.
