If you want a sporty Opel Adam, you buy the Adam S, and if you want a rugged, more capable Adam, you buy the Adam Rocks. At least that’s how it was before Opel decided to morph the two together and give customers the best of both worlds with the new Adam Rocks S.
The Adam Rocks S boasts the more masculine appearance and standard ‘Swing Top’ canvas roof of the Adam Rocks, but the 150 horsepower 1.4-liter engine, 6-speed manual transmission and sportier features of the Adam S. Opel says the model will “appeal to customers who want to combine dynamic driving outside of the city with thirst for adventure, open air feeling and stylish design,” which sounds like a niche customer to say the least, but the Adam is all about choice.
Thanks to its more powerful engine, the Adam Rocks S will sprint from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 8.5 seconds and provide ‘great elasticity’ at faster speeds and in higher gears. By comparison, the Rocks with the 1.0-liter 112 horsepower turbo completes the 0-62 mph sprint in 9.6 seconds. The Rocks S will also top out at 130 mph, while the 1.0-liter Rocks will stop accelerating at 121 mph.
Opel says the Rocks S is ‘perfectly equipped for fast and sporty excursions’ thanks to its 15mm lower suspension over the standard Rocks. This is rather ironic, as the press release for the standard Rocks claimed it had suspension mounted 15mm higher. You still get the tough plastic cladding around the wheel wells, however, along with the aforementioned Swing Top canvas roof and the spoiler from the Adam S.
Continuing with the Adam’s philosophy of personalization, the Rocks S will be offered in eleven different body colors with five roof colors including the ‘Red ‘n’ Roll’ hue pictured above, which is exclusive to Adam S models. There’s also optional Advanced Park Assist and Side Blind Spot Alert, along with Opel’s IntelliLink infotainment system.
Details on pricing and availability have yet to be announced.
