The 2015 GMC Canyon has added yet another trophy to GM’s ever-growing collection of awards this year. And for many truck buyers this one centers on what matters most: towing.
The competition, run by TheFastLaneTruck, was open to 2015 midsize trucks as well as 2014 trucks that are mechanically identical to the ’15 model. As a result, the ’15 Canyon CrewCab 4×4 took on a similarly equipped ’14 Nissan Frontier CrewCab and a ’15 Toyota Tacoma CrewCab TRD.
While each truck was judged on basic criteria like comfort and handling, the TFLTruck Golden Hitch Award focuses primarily on the results of one extreme towing test, known as the Ike Gauntlet.
In this case, all three trucks took a turn climbing up and down the 1.7-mile Eisenhower tunnel, a high-elevation pass with a 1.64 percent grade located near Denver, Colorado.
The trucks were fitted with a similarly sized trailer in order to hit a target GCWR of 10,800 lbs, and each was judged on downhill braking performance as well as power delivery on the timed run back to the top. Fuel economy was also measured on the grueling run up the hill.
The TFL Truck guys were also impressed by its interior, handling, comfort, and overall capability and in the end it was bestowed the inaugural Gold Hitch crown.
