Up for grabs on eBay is this splendid, majestic, 16-passenger beast: a 1954 Chevrolet 4400 Woody Estate Bus. Hauling the younglings to Bible Camp never looked so good.
The 1954 Chevrolet 4400 Woody Estate Bus is one of only two ever made, according to the seller; the other was destroyed by a fire. We realize that may seem foreboding, and could quite possibly frighten you out of wanting to spend half-a-million on a vehicle with doors made of kindling, but lightning doesn’t strike the same place twice.
What’s more, this wooded 1954 Chevy has been completely restored to “museum quality,” says the seller. The wood is mostly original, and the engine, drivetrain, frame, chassis, body, etc. have all been seen-to, with “no expense spared.” Chevrolet originally started offering these woody bodies by Campbell in 1939, but they only made its way onto two examples of the 16-passenger 1954 Chevrolet 4400 Transporter. Five rows of passenger seating are laid within the 23-foot-long body, and the original body plate with the serial number is intact.
The Woody’s listing names a price of $475,000, but we’re certain that would be easy to make up with Uber fares; who else has space and seating enough in one vehicle for Tina and her 15 birthday party guests? And more seriously, it happens to be a uniquely stunning, well-preserved bit of automotive history.
