GM Issues Stop-Sale On 2015 Chevy Trax And Buick Encore Crossovers

General Motors has asked dealers to stop deliveries of the 2015 Chevrolet Trax and Buick Encore crossovers due to a pending safety recall to fix an issue that can result in a loss of electric power steering.

The problem: in units affected by the recall, the steering column assembly housing may touch against the power steering printed circuit board. This might result in a sudden loss of power steering assist, making it more difficult to steer and increasing the risk of a crash.

Affected vehicles: two Gamma platform crossovers are affected, including the:

  • 2015 Chevrolet Trax
  • 2015 Buick Encore

Numbers of vehicles affected: about 2,300.

The fix: General Motors told dealers that it is working with the supplier to get the needed parts to fix the defect. Once the parts are available, dealers will inspect and possibly replace the steering column assembly. The repairs will be made free of charge to the customer.

Contacts: owners may search for GM recalls using this site. Owners can also contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 and Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300.

  1. We purchased a 2016 Chevy Trax LT AWD on SEP 10, 2016. After completing the paperwork, we were informed there was a recall on the vehicle, Manufacturer Recall Number: 2016007, and they could not release the vehicle until it was serviced. On Monday evening, Sept. 12, 2016, we were able to pick it up then.
On Sep 13, 2016, the TRAX was driven to work and back. The Trax was not driven again until Sept.18, 2016 (Sun.).
On Sept. 18, 2016, while driving home, the entire display went blank – no instrumentation and no audible indicators were available. We went straight to the dealership to see if we could get some answers as to what just happened, but they appeared to be unaware of this problem with the Trax. We were told to bring the Trax to the dealership’s service dept. the next day, on Sept.19. At the end of the day, we were told that the problem was with the circuit board and it had to be replaced. We were told that they would order the part and should come in via FEDEX and may take two days to get there, but on Thursday, Sept.22, we were told it may now take 1-2 weeks to get the part because they are waiting on the suppliers to get the part. Called on Thursday, Sept. 29, still no word on when the part will come in.
As of today, Oct. 1, 2016, it’s been a total of 13 days. We are now going into week 3…This is Unacceptable! Can anyone tell us what the status is on this vehicle? Why isn’t there a recall on this vehicle???
    VIN #3GNCJPSB8GL253458

    Thank you.
