The V8-equipped Holden Commodores may receive the majority of the media’s attention, but here at GM Authority, we have love for V6 powered versions of the Australian icon, too.
The VT-generation of the Commodore, produced between 1997 and 1999, was available with GM’s 3.8-liter Ecotec V6. Most drag racers probably opted for the larger Gen III 5.7-liter Holden V8, but the owner of this car, which is referred to affectionately as “Jet V6”, knew the 3.8 would do just fine with a little boost and a stroke.
Okay, so maybe the V6 needed a lot of boost to post these numbers at the track, but it’s impressive either way. This Commodore lays its power down in a calm and controlled manner and is totally drama-free, which were sure is a large contributing factor of the impressive 9-second passes.
This is probably one of the fastest big, four-door sedans with a V6 exhaust note around, so don’t miss it doing what it does best in the video below.

lol base trim level too not even sport trim
Base trim = lower weight so it’s actually the smarter way to go in regards to the Ecotec.
Remember when you used to be able to get a base model Commodore Executive with the V8? The ultimate sleeper. That stopped when the VY Commodore came out in 2002 introducing the SV8 base sports trim. Then with the VE they replaced the SV8 badge with the SS and replaced SS with SS-V.
Strange things go through the heads of these marketing people.
